Another Korean DVD review - this one was kind of fun. The movie is called " Heaven's Soldiers" (천군) ... or in Hanzi its ' 天軍'. & amp;nbsp; As you can guess from the posters below, its a Korean take on the popular time travel military movie:
You may have heard of the 1979 Japanese film ' GI Samurai' starring Sonny Chiba, or the 2005 remake ' '.... and the US take, 1980's ' The Final Countdown'.
Its a bit close to both of those stories in its own way - basically soldiers from modern day are transported back to a historically important period in their nation's history...
except this one has a modern Korean twist... half the soldiers are from South Korea and half are from North Korea... oh, and there's a missing nuke put in there for good measure. :-P
As far as I'm concerned anything that involves North Korea is entertaining!
Believe it or not, they happen to meet famous historical figure Admiral Yi Sun-Sin ( 李舜臣) a decade or two before he saves Korea from the Japanese navy.
Actually, I'd almost classify this movie as an action comedy more than anything else. Its actually pretty funny at some points. Ultimately they get to same kind of dilemma as all these time travel movies have - 'do we stay here and help these people change history or do we try to go back to the present?'
The movie definitely has some not so-subtle pro-Korean reunion subtext going on(w/ a healthy dose of regular Korean nationalism) ... but that's par for the course for these kinds of movies... (not as bad as '2009: Lost Memories').
I give it a 6/10.
