Cheung Chau is one small island in Hong Kong 30 minutes by fast ferry from Central. It has one of the tightest community with a lot of characters. I remember back in 1989 or so, there were a Cheung Chau skateboard crew, one of them is Chung Pak Khei aka ‘SiFu’, he was the illest. I’m pretty sure he was the leader within the crew, a true good leader. Pak Khei has been in Cheung Chau since day 1, he’s native and he’s CC OG, no doubt about it. He represents Cheung Chau to the fullest.
This year 2009, we still keep in touch with Pak Khei, in fact, he’s like a brother to me, he’s my sifu. We own a studio together called Studio8, he’s one of the illest photographers, the master of Photoshop and Illustrator, a good husband, a good cook and one of the most hardworking cats I know living. He has been involved in all of Hong Kong skateboarding contests, demos, fun days, you name it. He’s also the OG member of All Hong Kong Skateboards Association. Pak Khei is the bomb.
Last Saturday, we went to visit Cheung Chau for a day, just chill and relax, we need that shit. Pak Khei and Fion (his wife) were our guide. It started with some ill toast with condensed milk, Ping Pong, some more red bean ice cream, chill, checking out amazing scenery and we ended up having dinner at Cheung Chau Windsurfing Club. The owner of the place is the trainer of Hong Kong Gold Medalist, Ms Lei Lai Shan. His daughter, Stella Lai was my classmate and his brother Duncan Lai was at the same school as us back in the day. Now, Stella resides in San Francisco doing art and Duncan is an amazing actor in Taiwan. He came back a few months ago. Cheung Chau breeds amazing talented human being.
We were so lucky to have Duncan cooked for us. Dayeem sun, not only he’s one good looking cat with acting skills. He’s definitely one of the illest chefs as well. He, for sure, knows how to cook. He first made ‘Dog Claw Clam’, sounds nasty, look more nasty but it’s damn tasty. He said it’s to open our pallette, no wonder after that clam, I can pretty much each the whole restaurant. After that, the amazing squid dish, dayeem I want it right now. Then fried fish, smoke duck that he marinated with jasmine leaves, omelete egg with small fish, some vegetables and steam fish. Super super dope.
Definitely a dope day for us. THANK YOU to Pak Khei, Fion and Duncan for making it happen.
See you again super soon.
There’s no car in Cheung Chau. People get around by bicycles.
