Bhutto's death

Today we mourn a great loss for the cause of Democracy.

We've also seen the right-wing or right-leaning candidates use this tragedy to push their bellicose foreign policy. But things aren't so simple. Bhutto knowingly, heroically did place herself in an extremely dangerous situation by standing with her upper body exposed through the sunroof of her vehicle, but it is also true that Musharraf did not provide her with the security requirements she requested and she had indeed put the blame on him if something like this happened. It is also true that Musharraf can be seen as a military tyrant who has taken 10 billion dollars from the US without securing the border with Afghanistan and has been either unwilling or uncapable of preventing radicals to take root in Pakistan. It is also true that the US administration has chosen to wage a war in an Iraq without WMD's and threatened Iran while taking the eye off the ball in the unstable, nuclear Pakistan.
