random adventures 2011

for those who dont’t know me, im a really random person.

here are a few of this year’s adventures:

1. CATCHING LIZARDS /seriously?

i’ve been finding these things chilling in my garage.

the first one ive seen had half a tail, and i tried to catch it with tupperware. the second one was a few inches long - it was a tiny thing. i caught it in my hand and tossed it into my neighbor’s yard… kind of effed up for the neighbor and the lizard, but at the time i thought it was funny and an easy solution. since then, i’ve caught an extra four or five lizards in the garage…

yay to making new friends! and then dumping them a mile away at a park, haha. these babies were maybe eight or nine inches long…? i dumped the art stuff… i was all lizardy and i wasn’t going to use ancient watercolors anyway.

2. CHILLING IN BAKERSFIELD /or at least trying to…

my boyfriend had to stop by bakersfield for work, and in order to kill the sting of how much the drive will suck (which is a lovely four hour round trip), i go with him to keep him company. since i can’t be with him while he takes care of his work-matter, i offered to haul my things to a local coffee shop where i can sit down and paint. but when i carry my painting caddy, my laptop bag, and butchers tray, and purse… i look like im freakin homeless.

here’s a crappy photo i took of myself, using the reflection from glass doors to document my digs.

not to mention im also wearing my oversized boy clothes, which has paint and stains on them.

i found a local restaurant a few blocks away from the drop-off spot. when i walked in, the place was fairly empty… but i think the servers were apprehensive in having me eat there. in retrospect, i guess i can’t balme them? im like, i’m not homeless, but i am poor! ha. ha. ha. lol.

3. LADY BUG COLONY /say what?

i was walking the dog the other day and found a strange colony of lady bug like insects, just chilling in a group on the corner of the sidewalk. very curious… and very random.

there’s more of these suckers, but i don’t have a panoramic feature on my cellphone camera.

4. MANNEQUIN /flea market finds

a couple weeks back, my boyfriend and i decided to walk our dog around the rosebowl. we walked for a mile and realized that the flea market was closing, so we took a quick peek at the remaining booths.

above: super fantastic old school toys and crap-ola.

i saw this woman who was selling old school mannequins. i decided it was a good buy, so i gave her cash and in eighty degree heat, carried the damn thing a mile to the car. it was awesome!

my new toy, wearing a vintage skirt.

i’m learning how to sew, so i need a good dummy to practice on.

5. BORDER’S LIQUIDATION SALE /moleskine tree!

i was dropping off paintings at a mail service center, and instead of making a u-turn, i ended up in the border’s parking lot. i figured maybe i would stop by since i had some free time. when i walked in, i noticed that border’s had a huge liquidation sale, and man, when they say everything must go, they really mean it! they were selling the furniture! it was sad, but i’m a vulture so i was looking at the place as an oppertunity.. while i was looking, i walked by the moleskine tree rack. the manager gave it to me for under fifty bucks so i took it off his hands! i was so embarrassed to wheel it out of the store!

my other new toy, right before i shoved it into the elevator.

it was even more embarrassing and nerve-wracking when i was trying to throw it into my car. the tree swivels and is made of acrylic… so it was almost impossible to shimmy into my car…and when i did, the shelves started to crack. after a few cracks, scratches to my car, and a little loss in dignity, i was able to close all the car doors and take my new friend home.

i started adding my toys and small paintings to the moleskin tree. it looks awesome! and now i can keep track of what work i need to focus on and the work that is completed. i love it! totally worth the trouble!

while i was at it, i organized my studio. it doesn’t look like much, but this is my studio when it’s orderly… sad, huh? haha

more adventures, coming soon! dot dot dot ..
