Just got back from a break in Maldives. We were there for about 8 days. As it was recently my birthday, my wife granted me a boys trip. My surfing and diving buddies decided rather then get completely legless drunk, we would do something different. Actually, I ended up getting legless drunk with the Herbs before I left for the trip.... heehee. It was a great trip as we did a live aboard where we stay on a boat for the whole time and cruise to surf and dive spots daily. We didn't actually boat around a great deal as there was only 2 surf spots happening but it was all good. It was a totally active holiday, just the way I like it. We wake up at 5 or 6am, grab a cuppa tea and watch the sunrise. We then have a pre-dive briefing. We would then go via the dive boat to the stop and be in the water by around 730am. Back in the mother ship by 9am then we instantly grab our surf boards and join our non dive buddies in the water surfing till around 1030am. We then have breakfast and chill for an hour or so. We then surf again for 2 hours and have lunch. Chill again till 2pm and dive again till almost 4pm. We break out the beers and maybe do some fishing till dinner. Chill again after dinner. We pretty much did this schedule for 7 days. I had been to Maldives twice before. Both times for diving, its always been great diving but this was the first time for surfing. The was great, it was all reef bottom as we wore booties for protection. Its pretty scary when you get wiped out from surfing as it can drag you down and slam you against the reef but luckily we all managed to get away relatively unhurt. This was the first time I came really close to Manta Rays. They swam right up to us and above us. Amazing experience. I will upload some dive shots later as they are all on my friend's under water camera. We saws turtles, grey and white tip sharks, manta and eagle rays, loads of moray eels. lobster, shrimps, crabs, you name it. All the dives were drift dives as we main dive in the corner of channels where most of the activities happens.
It was fun staying on a boat for so long, non of us get sea sick but we all felt a bit dizzy after we got back on land . I was still a bit dizzy upon returning to HK. It was good to eat HK food again after a staple of boiled vegs, boiled or baked fish and rice. The curry was good though. Anyhow, I highly recommend surfing and diving in Maldives. Incredible dives and great waves pretty much all to ourselves. I got tonnes of sunset shots cause you hardly see that in HK. Only bummer is I lost my 24Herbs hat while surfing. I tied it to my wetsuit but a rather big wave came and ripped it off.... oh well.... JBS, I need a new hat ! Check out the pics !
