END MOODS/CURRENTS
| Entry | Wilson C and Scott came up to Emeryville to get lunch on saturday, so we decided to catch a movie at Bay St. The only movie we all hadn't seen was '1408', which I had heard good things about (like its very high tomatometer). Its a suspense/horror/fantasy type movie based on a story by Stephen King. John Kusack plays a writer who has published a series of books about supposedly haunted hotels. He stays one night in these places and writes up a review. He's never seen in a ghost and doesn't believe in any supernatural until he pays a visit to the Dolphin Hotel room #1408 in NYC, run by a cool Samuel L. Jackson, who tries to pursuede him to reconsider. The stories of the dozens of people who have committed suicide or been murdered in the room only make him want to try it more. OF course you know somethings going to happen...
As you would expect, its got a few good scares and frights in it... and a few really creepy scenes. Some of it is a bit cheesy (specifically the 'old timey movie' visions), and Kusack isn't as logical as I would have hoped in dealing with the situation... but of course then they wouldn't have a movie...
It has a definite Stephen King vibe throughout... most notably the use of some golden oldie reappearing in creepy ways throughout the course of the movie... I'll give it a 6/10. It wasn't great, but it kept me entertained through most of it.
