I missed the premiere at HKIFF last week but I caught a screening of Pang Ho-Chuengs' romantic comedy 'Love in a Puff' (志明與春嬌), starring Miriam Yueng and Shawn Yue as an unlikely couple who meet in Hong Kong's increasingly diminishing legal public smoking areas.
How can love not bloom with all this phallic imagery?!?
The film is well made and well written and as you can expect from the leads, acting is solid.
Be forewarned, this script has a lot of high speed dialogue full of bad words jokes, insults and double entendre. It takes a lot of effort to keep up with the subtitles if you are not a Cantonese speaker!
It has a category three rating partly because of the language but more than anything because all the characters are smoking incessantlythroughout the entire film. The Tobacco Control Office in HK must absolutely hatethis film!!
The movie has some nice cameos from familiar faces like Cheung Tat-ming, Vincent Kok and yes, Charmaine Fong!
There is no action and only a few laugh out loud scenes, but overall it delivers a steady stream of entertainment. Worth checking out on DVD or at the theater on a date.
Solid 7/10. Stay for the credits! ps - in case you missed it, my pics from the HKIFF's pre-event 'Love in a Puff' press con are here:http://www.alivenotdead.com/HKIFF/--profile-930260.htmland the video is here:http://www.alivenotdead.com/HKIFF/-34--profile-934001.html
