Asian Movie Review: Rebellion (同門,2009)

A HK film which has been on my DVD pile for a long time. I watched it through airplay using my AppleTV last night.    There's basically one reason I wanted to watch this movie...  not because its gangster directed by Herman Yau (very competent director of course),  but most definitely because of the cast....  in addition to the competent Shawn Yue and Chapman To,  this film features performances by Jun Kung, Conroy Chan and Paul Wong.   Along with Elanne Kong and Ella Koon, there's quite a lot of AnD faces in this film!

The story is not particularly unique, but its done well... the focus is on the infighting within a gang's main bosses,  each hustling to come out on top when someone tries to kill one of their fellow bosses.    All the action takes place over the course the night of the attack as the police and peacemakers maneuver to try to keep things from exploding.   Shawn plays the temporary replacement boss and Elanne is the door girl who at the triad restaurant who helps him out.

The plot and story aren't super awesome, but the best thing about the film are the colorful and various gangster characters including the bosses played by Jun, Conroy and Paul.

Paul's perpetual sex act character is definitely the funniest.  The film is worth checking out for these roles itself.  I think even w/o understanding cantonese slang,  you can enjoy the gritty caricatures these characters bring to the screen. Check it out if you can find the DVD.

7/10.

I picked this one up on blu-ray. ;) Yeah really liked this flic. The cast of characters really made it. While hanging out in an underground rock bar back in the day, I drunkenly told Herman Yau it was one of my favorite Hong Kong flics of all time. I wasn't kidding. :)
