Last night we went up to Mongkok to attend a fundraiser event for the Sichuan earthquake. It was a hastily organized Charity Basketball Game featuring members of the 'AND1' streetball team against a team from Hong Kong.
I'm not really up on my ' streetball' but apparently the 'AND1' team is a professionally sponsored team which travels around the world doing exhibitions...
I was kind of out of the loop on the organization of this event because I was in the US last week, but apparently the entire thing was organized in less than a week. A lot of people came together with support, donations and sponsorships, in our case alivenotdead.com was a media sponsor.
And we came w/ a good 10-15 people to support in person!
there was a good turnout of high profile celebrities to get the media's attention - Rosemary, Shawn Yue, Jaycee Chan, Terence, 24 Herbs, Vincent Kok amongst others.
Basically the 'Hong Kong team' was fodder for the AND1 team -- they tried their hardest, but it was clear that the AnD1 team was not too worried about the score, they were mostly just creating opportunities for some spectacular alley-oops and reverse dunks.
You'd think it'd get boring after the first 10 or 20 times, but they managed to keep it entertaining the entire time.
A bit of antics, joking around and even some not-so-good hearted humiliation of their opponents was thrown in for good measure...
During half time they had a performance by 24 Herbs... it was fun but there was aweful acoustics in the gym and the fact that there was only 1 spotlight for the entire group... But I think everyone enjoyed it nonetheless.
They did a 'shoot baskets for charity' contest too, Rosemary, 24 Herbs and Jaycee Chan.... Jaycee was the only one who seemed able to make baskets under pressure, obviously he practices free throw shots a lot.
At the end they announced they that between the sponsors and the ticket sales, they had raised over HK$80,000 for Quake relief! thats not too bad for less than 1 week's prep time! Congrats!
We got invited to go with the AND1 team to eat dinner, but we're all saving ourselves for tomorrow night, so we just grabbed some MOS burger at Langham place and called it a night around 11. I'm still a jetlagged from the US, but hopefully by tomorrow I'll be better.
