On May 3rd a big group of us went to check out Redbull's 2008 Street Battles Dance Competition held up in Mongkok.
Yes, alivenotdead.com was an official media sponsor, which means we get to be in the graffiti wall! :-D
Believe it or not, I'm not the BIGGEST dance battle fan who works at alivenotdead.com, but I do enjoy a good dance battle once in a while - and for sure the event didn't disappoint. it was pretty high production value for a 'street culture' event for sure:
they had a raised circular stage w/ DJ/judges platforms on both ends. There were 16 competitors who faced off 1-on-1 in a tournament style bracket (like the sweet 16 in the NCAA basketball finals... except w/ break dancing....
The competitors came from all across Asia - HK, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and even Macau (where's Mainland China? they gotta have a few good ones). just like in those movies basically one guy would dance while the other stood and watched and made faces like he's too cool and then they'd switch. After a few turns each, the music would stop and the judges would declare a winner. the winner went on to the next round...
to better explain - check out the video...
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BKk87duSMQ the guy in red, Taisuke from Japan was the winner... you could tell right away he had the best moves.
Here's someone else's videos of his battles:

Actually the batter in my camera was dying, so i didn't take a lot of photos. But these guys were there as special guest performers:
And they also had some attractive ring card girls:
actually the one on the right was at the after party, she was pretty cool. I invited her to our anniversary party but I don't think she came. :-P
After I went home my buddy from Red Bull invited me to come down to the after party in TST, since its near my house I went to check it out....
I met the judge 'Storm' from Germany (here's a link to just ONE of his many youtube videos), he was pretty cool, he was telling me about growing up as a break dancer in Berlin back in the day.... some funny stories about going over to meet the east German break dancers after the wall came down in 1990.... someone should make a movie!
