'Shinjuku Incident' (新宿事件) is Jackie Chan's latest film, costarring Daniel Wu, in which he makes a departure from his martial arts-based action formula and instead goes for a more gritty story about illegal Chinese immigrants working in Tokyo's underworld. The film is mostly filmed on location in Tokyo's Shinjuku ward, and centers around the gangs that control the hostess bars, pachinko parlors, etc.
Its hard for me to give a fair review for this movie, since I am a big fan of Derrick Yee's work, so I'm predisposed to like it in advance. Perhaps the best way for me to review it is just to say that I think I still like 'Protege' ( 門徒) more than this one.
'Protege' and 'Shinjuku Incident' are alike in many ways, as is Yee's 'One Night in Mongkok' ( 旺角黑夜)... dark, gritty, violent, etc. Always showing that nothing is really black and white and that good people will do bad things to survive. Jackie does a good job even though he's not jumping off high buildings and kicking people. I have to say just like 'One Night in Mongkok', I have trouble believing Daniel Wu as a FOB immigrant from the Mainland. He's too tall, his teeth are too straight and he's too well fed. :-P
The film also features the beautiful Fan Bingbing, Xu Jinglei, Lam Suet, Chin Ka Lok and Hayama Hiro.
7/10 - I saw the cat. 3 version, which has some extreme violence. Be careful!
