Poland in Close Up and Rediscovering American Indies

[29 February 2012] The 36th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF)'s key art, the Fiery Phoenix, was created to express filmmakers' passion and motivation. The Phoenix's creative fire can be found in the selection of Polish and American Indie films in this year's HKIFF selection.

Restructuring History - Poland in Close-Up

Following the death of Stalin and the downfall of the dictatorial regime, Poland's iron curtain was pulled opened and the air of freedom finally blew in. For many decades, Poland's history was tragic, from the Nazi invasion and vast destruction of World War II, to the subsequent revolution and the communist regime. Several courageous directors emerged during the 1950s - the "Poland New Wave". Since the demise of the Soviet Union, Polish cinema has been more concerned with issues of humanity, alongside the historic events and social movements which can never be forgotten.

Avant-garde Cinema - Rediscovering American Indies

Creativity, courage and niche are bywords for American Indies. Ironic, subversive, thrilling and innovative, American Indies have been popular with many film fans and filmmakers. In this year's Rediscovering American Indies section, HKIFF presents a number of quality titles that have screened around the world including Berlin, Cannes, Sundance, and Toronto Film Festivals. This year's selection is an occasion to showcase the creative power of the non-Hollywood American cinema to Hong Kong audiences.

American Indies in this year's HKIFF include Damsels in Distress, the latest film from Whit Stillman after a 13 year hiatus, and winners from Berlin (Crystal Bear, On the Ice,); Cannes Critics' Week (Grand Prize, Take Shelter), and Sundance (Best Director: Sean Durkin, Martha Marcy May Marlene).

[2012年 2月 29日 ] 本 屆 電 影 節 主 題 設 計 「 火 鳳 凰 」 寓 意 電 影 藝 術 工 作 者 對 創 作 的 熱 誠 與 衝 勁 ， 而 波 蘭 及 美 國 獨 立 電 影 一 直 向 世 人 所 展 現 的 火 熱 創 作 魄 力 ， 與 「 火 鳳 凰 」 的 信 念 一 致 。 今 屆 香 港 國 際 電 影 節 特 意 精 選 一 系 列 來 自 波 蘭 及 美 國 的 佳 作 ， 並 於 電 影 節 期 間 放 映 ， 讓 影 迷 感 受 兩 地 電 影 人 的 熱 誠 和 創 意 。

重 構 歷 史 特 寫 波 蘭

隨 著 蘇 聯 獨 裁 者 史 太 林 倒 台 ， 波 蘭 便 從 鐵 幕 極 權 統 治 中 解 放 出 來 ， 清 新 的 自 由 空 氣 令 敢 言 的 新 晉 導 演 如 雨 後 春 筍 般 湧 現 ， 自 成 一 格 的 「 波 蘭 電 影 學 派 」 亦 從 此 形 成 。 經 歷 過 二 次 大 戰 、 工 人 革 命 及 共 產 政 權 倒 台 ， 波 蘭 人 在 世 界 歷 史 軌 跡 上 刻 下 了 一 道 血 的 印 記 ， 以 致 電 影 往 往 滲 透 著 一 股 蒼 涼 卻 寫 實 的 世 情 味 道 。 波 蘭 電 影 總 教 人 有 點 肅 殺 及 落 寞 ， 卻 是 一 部 活 生 生 的 歷 史 文 本 。 本 屆 電 影 節 便 為 香 港 影 迷 選 映 了 8部 波 蘭 新 片 ， 包 括 :

創 新 、 大 膽 及 脫 離 主 流 ， 向 來 都 是 美 國 獨 立 電 影 的 代 名 詞 。 戲 謔 、 顛 覆 、 驚 慄 、 危 情 ， 總 之 就 是 非 主 流 。 去 屆 (第 35屆 )電 影 節 為 影 迷 搜 羅 了 大 部 份 來 自 辛 丹 士 和 多 倫 多 電 影 節 的 獨 立 電 影 ， 今 年 更 把 搜 尋 網 絡 擴 闊 至 世 界 各 地 。 電 影 的 靈 魂 是 創 作 ， 前 衛 自 主 的 美 國 獨 立 電 影 ， 便 是 靈 魂 得 以 完 全 釋 放 的 地 方 。
