It's been months since I've trained properly and after a month back from China I went to my first competition in a long while. Not that I've done very many. For 6/7 years of training I've only done 6 tournaments.
The sport is Wushu. If you are not familiar with this term, it is a Chinese performance Martial Art. People always ask me if I jump kicked anyone in the head during and I tell them it's just forms/routines.
So I have to say that I was quite disappointed with the turnout. The level of participation in Vancouver is not nearly as good as it was before. It was a traditional event with Wushu divisions I suppose.
By the way, traditional is more focused on stances, power (what I consider Wushu basics), and it doesn't have all the jump kicks and acrobatics that Wushu has incorporated into it.
So there was plenty of traditional clubs there but I was expecting at least 3 more Wushu clubs that didn't show up. I was hoping to see some of the guys from last year's event (was the last time I saw anyone from Vancouver Wushu scene).
But still it was a lot of fun, my club took pretty much gold in every division. I decided on doing only one event and was coaching a fighting/synchronized form.
I stumbled landing one of the jump kicks and I was a little under the time requirement but I managed to place 2nd. My younger brother was 1st. We compete in different divisions normally, I'm southern fist, he's northern. But this is a traditional event and they don't really know what's what for Wushu (contemporary stuff).
The group form I was coaching was first in their division. My friends Will and Koichi did quite well considering we took only a week to create and prepare it. And the two of them are both novices and still new to a lot of things. So I was overjoyed at the outcome. Although there's still a lot of work to do if it's ever gonna be in our Demo.
Wanting to post videos, but it'll take some time to upload and stuff. Till then.
