BadBoyBen is the founder of What’s Good? – a multi-disciplinary creative agency specializing in brand strategizing, relationship marketing and new media.
Since the company was founded in 1998, What’s Good? has won numerous awards and has been at the forefront of new media and brand strategizing in Malaysia.
Ben has always had his finger firmly on the pulse of emerging trends and this helps him monitor shifts in the lifestyle landscape. Through his many different creative outlets, he is constantly pushing boundaries and blurring the lines between design, music, fashion and lifestyle.
Music is one of Ben’s obsessions, and in 2000, he started DJing as a hobby. Since then he has blown up dancefloors in Hongkong, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, London, Manila, Barcelona and many other cities around the world. He is a DJ who is highly rated by all those who have heard his cheeky dirty house sets and was the first Malaysian DJ to be signed to an international management agency (Milk Management) in 2002. His energy infects his music through and through, and his performances are always an exciting ride from beginning to end. He has constantly gained respect and praise from peers with his technical ability and eclectic selection that never ceases to surprise punters and professionals alike.
Ben was the first Asian DJ to perform at English superclub Gatecrasher’s London residency at Heaven nightclub. That in itself was a monumental achievement that further cemented his stellar reputation as one of Asia’s top dance music personalities.
From 2003-2006 Ben hosted Malaysia’s biggest dance music show, MOVE, on 98.8FM – one of Malaysia’s largest radio stations. MOVE had a weekly audience in excess of 1.6 million listeners in Malaysia and Singapore. Making this transition from club DJ to radio personality allowed him to reach a much bigger audience and garner an even greater fan base. It would be a gross understatement to say that his influence has always reached far beyond the walls of any club.
He graced the cover of KLue magazine in 2004 with indie singer/songwriter Pete Teo. The two became fast friends and led to Ben producing Pete’s record-breaking sell-out concert at the Actor’s Studio in Kuala Lumpur.
In 2005, to salute his achievements and contributions in the field of dance music and clubbing, Ben was named Malaysia’s First Superstar DJ and one of Malaysia’s 17 Most Outstanding Individuals by one of the country’s most-respected lifestyle guides – FACES Magazine.
Ben’s impeccable musical taste has also seen him being commissioned to design musical environments for many retail and commercial spaces – the most high-profile of which so far was the award-winning 5-star g Hotel in Penang, Malaysia.
Charged with creating a signature sound for every outlet and area of the hotel, Ben designed a modern nu-jazz/electronica policy to suit the avante-garde and minimalistic interior that has had visitors to the hotel raving and critics applauding over and over.
In 2013, Ben created Groove Nation, an Asian entertainment lifestyle brand, whose sole focus is to create engaging entertainment experiences for clubbers around the world. In a very short space of time, Groove Nation has become one of the most reputable entertainment companies in the Asian region and is now the official representative for the incredible clubbing superbrands Ministry of Sound and Hed Kandi in Southeast Asia.
In 2011, to acknowledge his status as one of Southeast Asia’s foremost tastemakers, American footwear company DC Shoes allowed Ben to design his own colorway of one of their most popular sneaker models. He was and still is the only Malaysian to receive this incredible honor.
