I just met Emmy Lee Moss before her gig at Grappas.
In West New Territories, born and raised, in Tower Records was where she spent most of her days. Chilling out maxing relaxing all cool and all listening to some Weezer outside the school, when a couple of locals who were up to no good, started making trouble over her western woman-hood, she started listening to Aaron Kwok and her mom got scared, she said “you moving to your uncle and aunts in England”.
Hahah I know England don't rhyme but I'm not DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Anyway, yeah, she was sitting there, smiling often and telling us how much she loves Weezer, even spoke Cantonese.
I am completely and utterly smittened.
During our chat, I touched upon serious subjects such as her growing up at a local school as a "westerner".
This has been a topic that's interested me for a while,. The divide between the expats/westerners/abcs/gweilos and local people in HK is huge. Just two completely different kinds of people sharing one city. (I can go both ways, BOOYAH!)
International school kids are an interesting subject for me. I've met plenty of them and I'm amazed to this day that there are these people who lived in Hong Kong the first 18 years of their lives, yet they're completely, "Americanized", like if I met them in LA I woulda assumed they're ABCs. Cause I keep thinking "yeah you guys speak English only at school and all, but you still living in the city of HK! how can you be this Westenized? How can you not have MK in you and not say a "dieu!" every now and then?"
So imagine being a westerner in HK but not go to an international school. That's what she went through. She said her friends (the rich ones at international schools) all got into Western culture while she was stuck listening to HK stuff. But apparently she didn't mind cause she grew to love Aaron Kwok.
Highlights of our chat--
1: she points at Tom's Weezer tee and said "awesome".
2: she tells us Pinkerton is her favorite Weezer album
3: she says she still listens to Weezer daily
4; she gets gushy when talking about Aaron Kwok
5: she says my KROQ tee was cool
6: she speaks Cantonese
7: she smiled, often.
