There's a story in today's SCMP about the controversy behind the poster of the film Coco Before Chanel. Get this--because Audrey Tautou is holding a cig, the poster is deemed inappropriate. The poor PRs at Lark films had to make a statement and be all like Will-Smith-when-Uncle-Phil-interrogates-him mode: "hey man... I ain't know it would be this big a deal!"
A few pages later in the same paper, there's an ad for Coco with the cig photochopped.
This always gets me. You can show guns, tits, flesh wounds, blood, Nic Cage's hair and closeups of Kirsten Dunst's mug on movie posters but you can't show cigarettes???? And I'm not even a smoker. In fact if there's one thing I can be sure I'll never do--it's smoke. But still.
Here are a few daily pick-me-ups
1: My editor reads this blog. He got on my case today about blogging late into the night (apparently something about me being sleepy at work? Little does he know I blog late because I can't sleep, not the other way around), but then after that he offered me the chance to write the Editor's Note (the section next to the masthead) in the upcoming issue of Beats. So I dunno, was it because of what he read on my blog? So for the first time in the three year history of Beats, the editor's note will not be written by the editor in chief. And this marks my first published writing where I get to write in first person instead of the usual faceless third person structure.
2: Went to HMV today and saw a bunch of stuff I wanted to buy.
OK Computer Vinyl
Giant Robot Magazine... amazing cover. I love Japan.
I ended up buying these three things.
Slam is yet another victim who banked on a Kobe/Bron finals but lost, along with Nike, Gatorade, ESPN, and David Stern.
That's the Eel's greatest hits album. It is fucking amazing.
And the book is a good read.
