He may not that be that well known to those in HK. So here's a quick primer:
He came to fame as Eric Forman on popular US show That 70s Show. I loved that show in the early seasons cause it had a decidedly 70s rock and roll feel (later seasons sucked). Anyway, even though Ashton Kutcher quickly became the mainstream breakout star, Topher caught the eye of many filmmakers and landed a few juicy roles. He had a powerful role as a druggie in Traffic, a small part in Mona Lisa Smile, and had two hilarious cameos in the first two Oceans 11 movies. The second cameo was the best: playing himself, Topher told Brad Pitt's character that he "phoned in that Dennis Quaid" movie because he was such a mess.
"That Dennis Quaid movie" was this lowkey little heartwarming flick In Good Company (the trailer for that actually ran before Oceans 12). Topher was great in it, and Scarlett Johansson looks like she always does here, so that's a win.
Anyway, both Ashton Kutcher and Topher Grace left That 70s Show after six seasons because they were becoming big stars. Immediately after leaving the show, Topher landed the role of Venom in Spidey 3 (always thought he woulda made a good Peter Parker) and his career looked to be on the rise.
Now I know Spidey 3 wasn't exactly beloved and the Venom angle played out so horribly that geeks were disgusted, but Spidey 3 was still a big hit. But Topher Grace hasn't been seen since.
He's had nothing out in the past three years. Where did he go?
I felt the urge to blog about this because I'm watching Win A Date With Tad Hamilton right now. Well, not watching watching it, I have it on in the background as I'm doing freelance work.
If you like rock and roll and a bad ass American father figure, I highly recommend That 70s Show. I say watch it up to season 4. That's when the Eric Forman/Donna Pinchiotti love saga wraps up and them singing Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love in the car is about the ideal way to go out. They shoulda ended the show then with a caption that read: AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER. THE END.
