you can plan a pretty picnic but can't predict the weather

This is such a beautiful cover. Look closely, you'll spot not only HK locales but various inside jokes.

-Facebook is streaming the new Dead Weather (aka Jack White's new band) album in its entirety. The thing rocks. But then again would you expect anything less from Jack White?

- MJ's memorial will cost the city of LA 1.4 mil

As I was watching the memorial two nights ago I felt nothing. I didn't dislike it but it just didn't resonate, I was blank that night. I was totally aware of the significance and the magnitude of the event: it was the biggest pop culture event this decade, and not since 9/11 has one event been simultaneously covered by the media like this.

But still... I dunno. I thought Berry Gordy's tribute was great--he not only gave MJ the respect he deserved as a musician but also touched upon his bad decisions and controversies, he didn't just paint a puff piece like the others. Al Sharpton is an idiot and he used the opportunity to pull his hidden race card agendas again. Everytime he's on TV he turns it into "The Black Pride Hour of Power".

-One of the best things about the office is we literally have CDs all over the place. I would upload a picture of our desk but my editor reads this blog and he may think it's a diss to him--it's actually meant to be props because I think a desk full of CDs and old magazines is rad. I'll look through it and every now and then I'll find a classic. The best part is, with my ed, I know he got those albums when they came out. So if I come across a classic album frmo 2002, I konw the album is literally 7 years old and not just purchased last month. I know this because there's dust and stains on it. The other day I stumbled upon an old Entertainment Weekly with Spider-man 1 on the cover. Think about how long ago that was.

Anyway, today I randomly came across this

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. A modern day classic.

I listened to this in 99 and it didn't resonate that much cause I was a kid then. A few years later I gave it another spin and its greatness dawned on me. This is the best r&b album of the late 90s. It's like the OK Computer for r&b.

I know what you mean about the MJ hoopla. His greatness as a musician was pretty much confined to his childhood until the late 80s. Then the creativity began to be eclipsed by his personal life. I remember being in France in 1988 and everyone was such a huge fan of MJ. I just kept saying that his personal life showed that he was one sick puppy. Little did I know what was to come in the succeeding 2 decades! I understand his importance for pop music, but I just never connected with the music after his Jackson 5 days. He was an exact contemporary of mine (we were both born in 1958) and there were a lot of other types of music I was listening to. I never bought a single Jackson 5 of Michael Jackson album in my life. I have about 1,000 CDs. That tells you something.
