what influence nas raps?

So lately, these cats think they came across a revelation... that I write movie reviews on the side for extra income. Suddenly, lips starts moving and things are flying behind my back.

Negro Please.

If I wanted to hide the fact that I do freelance movie reviews, I wouldn't have mentioned it to multiple people at the office, write about it on my facebook notes, and put it in my ALIVENOTDEAD PROFILE under the "ABOUT ME" section.

All writers do freelance. I didn't openly advertise at the office...Read more

apology to Golden Scene...

In the "Five Minutes With Winnie Tsang" section of our Dec/Jan issue of Beats (page 7), I erroneously mentioned that the movie Ring didn't do too well at the office when in fact it was a box office smash. The error was due to my crappy Cantonese--I made an error in translating the Cantonese to English.

I feel bad for this fuck-up, as Golden Scene is one of the few companies who has true passion for GOOD films. Winnie buys films based on how good it is and how much she likes it, not how much it could potentia...Read more

Mecca of Basketball, part 2

A few nights after Kobe went for a dominating offensive performance with 62-0-3.

Lebron follows up with a juggernaunt all around performance. 52-11-10.

As basketball fans, we are lucky to be witnessing these two going back and forth like this.

Everyone wanna blow up in NYC, the Garden, the Mecca.

Somewhere, MJ is smiling.

Alaskans are dumb

Ok maybe I'm too harsh. They're not dumb. They just vote on stuff they know nothing about.

The Mecca of Basketball

I clicked on ESPN early Tuesday morning to see Kobe dropped 61 at Madison Square Garden.

"He is so Jordan like it's eerie," I thought.

Jordan was always known to step up his game at MSG, the world's most famous arena, the place he calls "the mecca of basketball", and Kobe is similarly following suit.

Later in the day, I went to DaHoops NBA Cafe in Causeway Bay. Great place. At first I thought it was just a gimmick, regular upstair mini cafe with mediocre food. But nope. The owner a...Read more

Thank you

We here at Beats have been very fortunate the last year with interns. I talked to two earlier...they been here what, 4 to 6 months now, and it really seems like the time to move on is looming.

Now make no mistake, despite their title of interns, they did nearly as much work as the Editor and myself. And we wouldn't have even been able to put out a mag the past half year without their help.

It started early 2008 with the scary efficient, machine-like Ysabelle. She would pump stuff out and never say a word. We'd hand her an ...Read more

Bootleggin'

Maybe it's because I've started to meet more and more people from the movie scene--thus seeing how hard they work--lately...but piracy is really starting to annoy me.

Coworkers lately have just been in love with going to china and buying back packs and packs of bootleg movies.

Now I don't wanna be one of them hypocrites on a high horse, and I'll admit I download music and own bootleg movies as well. But as a rule of thumb, I always buy the stuff I like because it's worthy of support. I downloaded the White...Read more
