Before you judge.... |

It is very easy in this difficult time of sadness to produce angry, self-righteous assumptions about what other people are and aren't doing to help in the earthquake relief. I think instead of wasting time and energy assuming that people aren't doing anything, maybe that energy should be focused on looking for other ways to help. Let's be constructive in this time of disaster instead of counter productive. I also must remind you that this blog is but a tiny tiny sliver of what I am doing in my life. Rest assured I am doing my part to help.

I have been in China since the 13th of May. Although I was far from the quake's epicenter(Beijing and Xian) I can see that the whole nation has come together to support those affected and I was deeply moved. I am so proud that the nation has come together in this time of adversity to fight to help their fellow man. For three days at 2:28pm, we observed three minutes of respect for the victims. Normally I would say "observed a moment of silence", but it was anything but that. For three minutes all cars and people stopped but horns and sirens were blasting throughout, maybe in an effort to give hope to those still trapped and let them know they are not alone. I won't be telling you to donate money because you all should have already done that already. You shouldn't need a "star" telling you to help your fellow man, the images of destruction that you all must have seen in the news should have already pushed you to help.

I am personally frustrated because I have been trying to find a way to help, other than by just donating money. I'm still looking into ways for me to actually go into Sichuan and help and by help I mean go in to doing real relief work. So far all my inquiries have been unfruitful. Organizations like the Red Cross and UNICEF have told me it's still too dangerous to allow me to go. I understand it's a liability to have celebrities in these danger zones but it is so frustrating to want to help and be turned away. I also don't want to do superficial help either. I have good building skills and know how to use some heavy machinery so I know I won't be one of those celebrity volunteers that needs to be looked after. It's difficult because I do not have an organization to help get me in there like Jet or Jackie but it looks like the solution will be to join their team to help. Again if anyone knows of any other organizations accepting able bodied volunteers please let me know.

The healing process will be very long. It is not something that can be taken care of with just one donation or a few days of attention. The victims can and will be scared for life, rebuilding efforts will take years. It is important that effects of this tragedy be vigilantly monitored and most importantly not forgotten.

Hey Daniel, You sounded like you have done all u can at the moment. Maybe u could save ur energy and time for the rebuilding later. I too felt frustrated that I cannot help too much in both monetary and physical terms for Sichuan at the moment. But I am sure one day I can help in other way. The rebuilding is not just NOW, but maybe 5 to 10 years as mentioned by Tsang Chi Wai onTVB. But for any celebrity to try to get into Sichuan and help at the moment might be too big a liability even though you said u know quite a lot about building work. I have just moved back from UK and was very impressed with even the Hong Kong people at Times Sqaure for the 3 mins silence of respect. After the Olympic Torch Relay and this horrible Earth Quake, I hope all the Chinese are waking up that we are a great nation with many compassionate fellow country men. WIsh Sichuan and China all the best in future. Anyway, I thought Premier Wen was amazing.

its a fine line... some could argue that your position and time are better spent doing fundraising than actual hands on stuff there... (ie - 1 hour of you on TV doing a fundraiser could equal enough money to hire 100 construction workers, etc) but i understand your frustration, watching from the sidelines and complaining about other people isn't the same as really doing something yourself.

The rebuilding phase really hasn't started yet. There are still victims to be removed from the rubble and then so many destroyed and partially destroyed buildings have to be removed. That is going to take time. Then, and only then, will rebuilding start in earnest. That will be over the summer. That is when you will be able to help with that phase. Relief efforts and rebuilding take a great deal of coordination. Those who are trained in this sort of work--be they in government agencies or experience charity groups--have to come up with hundreds of specific rebuilding plans. It is going to involve a lot more than simply building a few homes. Infrastructure, such as water and electricity, was destroyed in the most effected areas. Rebuilding such utilities must be coordinated with the government agencies that run them. That type of work cannot be rushed, or it will not be done properly. Cash donations are to provide for the immediate needs of the 5 million plus displaced. It takes a lot of money to sustain that many people for months on end as the rebuilding begins. There may be work you can do around the distribution of aid. A lot of very important work does not have to be done on the ground, in direct contact with the affected. To keep costs low at charity organizations, many rely heavily on volunteer labor to perform administrative tasks. No victims will thank you personally for doing that sort of volunteer work, but it is every bit as needed as handing out bottles of water or tents in the effected areas. It is this type of volunteer work that means that more of every donation goes directly to the victims and is not used for (necessary) administrative costs. There are so many ways to help, many of them unseen. We must never forget that.

I help plan a volunteer trip from the US to orphanages in Beijing and Luoyang last November. I'm asking my friend who I met on the trip to plan one with me this year to goto Sichuan. There are many Childrens that will need our help there, and I hope to make it there by year end. Sadly, these things takes time to plan out and organize. If we can't be there now, Financial and Moral support will matter most.
