• Hollywood acting coach Ms Jeanne Hartman returns to teach in Hong Kong

 

Hollywood acting coach Ms Jeanne Hartman, “The Actor’s Detective”, returns to Hong Kong from November 29 to December 10, 2012, to teach her acclaimed two-day workshops for actors, her three-night workshop for writers, and private coaching sessions for actors and corporate executives. This will be Ms Hartman’s ninth visit to Hong Kong.

 

Jeanne’s teaching definitely gets results. Since her last series of workshops in Hong Kong in May 2012, many of her students here (actors, directors and screenwriters) have worked on professional projects:

 

-  Uri Schwarz directed a feature film titled in Hong Kong, starring two of Jeanne’s students, Zac Dee and Jason Bradley. 

-  Derek Ting wrote and starred in the recently released feature film . It also stars Darren E. Scott, a graduate of Jeanne’s acting workshop, and was directed by Simon Yin, a graduate of Jeanne’s acting workshop and also of her Directors’ Lab.

-  Lawrence Gray recently directed his first full-length feature film, . The film stars Jai Day, a graduate of Jeanne’s acting workshop.

-  Grace Huang, Osric Chau, Darren E. Scott, Celina Jade and Daniel Wu starred in , which recently opened in the US.

-  Terence Yin is starring in a new Hong Kong movie, .

-  Jason Tobin recently completed work on a feature film titled , playing the lead role of an Asian-American serial killer.

 

 

This two-day public workshop is for actors, directors, writers, performers and artists of all levels of experience and training who want to take their talent and technique to higher levels.

 

Participants will: improve their ability to break down and analyze scripts; find clues and explore ways to create believable characters; improve their ability to memorise scripts; rehearse and perform film and television scenes for auditions; recall emotions; use improvisational skills to deepen their performances, and learn techniques they can adapt for any work situation on the set or on stage. The aim is for everyone to learn new ways to create exciting, believable performances.

 

Ms Hartman is known for her razor-sharp ability to spot what’s working, and what’s not working, in a scene. She said: “Believability is the bottom line to great acting, but you need to know how to create that believability in very ‘unbelievable’ situations! Great acting is in the reacting: reacting to the other person, to the situation your character is in the middle of, and even to your own thoughts. Many people can tell you that something is not working, but can they tell you how to fix it? People need to learn the why and the how: why something isn’t working and how to fix it. That’s my expertise, but I want you to have the tools to be able to solve the problems yourself. That’s what you learn in my workshops!”

 

Mr Jason Tobin, one of her students and the producer of her workshops here, said: “We encourage past students to return to Jeanne’s acting workshop, because they always learn more each time. Jeanne always brings something new every time she teaches here – new techniques and new material. I’ve noticed that some students in Hong Kong feel like they’ve learned everything they need in just one two-day workshop, but that’s not the attitude of professional actors in LA, New York or London, because they know that acting is a skill that needs to be constantly honed and practised. After all, even Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem spends one month every year working with his acting coach – in a recent interview, Bardem explained: ‘It’s always about really dismantling what you think you know and the security and the safety zone where you are, trying to make a step forward to something new, something that will put you in some trouble.’”

This three-session public workshop is specifically for writers: experienced writers, new writers, actors who want to start writing, and directors who want to improve a script they’re planning to direct. The focus will be on writing believable and interesting characters, dialogue and situations for film or theatre, and on helping writers of all genres to improve their material and add to their toolkit of writing techniques. As Jeanne says, “Writing is very solitary work, so getting feedback, instruction and support helps writers to keep going and to complete their projects.”

 

In between each session, participants will be expected to apply what they’ve learned in class by revising their material. Participants need to attend all three sessions.

 

Students from Ms Hartman’s acting workshops in December will be invited to attend the final night of the Writers’ Lab on December 10 to perform the material that the writers develop during the workshop.

While she is in Hong Kong, Ms Hartman will also offer private coaching sessions for actors who want more personal attention, perhaps to address a very personal challenge. “If you’re preparing for an audition or a job you’ve already been hired for, a private coaching session is perfect for you,” said Ms Hartman.
