Japanese Koi Farm in HK

On a recent episode of Dolce Vita, we visited a koi farm here in Hong Kong.  This kind of excursion is a little different from the usual glitzy restaurants and watch events we go to but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of driving out to the New Territories and getting in touch with nature.     Who says there's nothing fun to do in HK?!!

HK's Coolest Apartment?

You know how we all complain about not having enough living space in HK?

Well check out this dude's place!  Not content to just complain, he actually went and did something about it.  (Of course, it helps that he is an architect.)

Move over, Autobots and Decepticons!

See Me Drink a BUG Cocktail!

Lately, I've been blogging a lot about cockroaches because of a certain unwelcome visitor in my house (see previous blogs).

Well, as some of you know since I've come to you for advice, my throat's been bothering me on and off for the past few months.  It's very annoying since I depend on my voice for a livelihood so I have been trying all kinds of different remedies from lozenges to teas to honey.

Well, the CRAZIEST thing I tried was drinking hot water infused with salted bees!  Yes, bees.  However...Read more

Two Movie Reviews -- 2012 and Rebellion (同門)

Saw two movies in the last 48 hours.  48小時內看了兩套電影。

2012 I was lucky to get a ticket to the premiere of 2012, starring John Cusack.  The premise of the movie (no surprise given the movie posters) is that the world will come to a catastrophic end on 12/21/12.  Although lots of people get killed (come 'on, the world ends!), the movie makers make a point to not show graphic violence (e.g., blood; limbs ripped off; etc.).  Even without blood and gore, I was surprised to find myself kind of nauseous at the i...Read more

大强正專 #3 -- The Story of Dai Keung #3 (It's PERSONAL now)

OK.  Enough's enough.  Now it's personal.

A few more nights have gone by.  Same thing each night.  DK comes, DK hangs around, we stare each other down, DK leaves.  Dez goes to bed frustrated and fearful that DK will bring a hundred friends and swarm his head.

Anyway, you guys have been GREAT and have made lots of good suggestions, including:

1.  Glue trap -- I like this idea since DK can be preserved whole and I will have a trophy at the end of it, much liked a taxid...Read more

大强正專 #2 -- The Story of Dai Keung #2

Night 5 (Update) So last night, after I wrote my entry, I went against my own advice and tried the rubber band again.  When I was young, I was a very talented rubber band shooter but that was with the fat rubber bands.  I turned the house upside down but couldn't find a "fatty" but did manage to find some thin ones that are nice and elastic (for those of you who live in HK or other tropical climates, you'll know that rubber bands become brittle and useless very quickly so it's not always easy to find...Read more

大强正專 -- The Story of Dai Keung

OK...so I have been MIA forever.

My first blog in a long time is about the cockroach living in my kitchen.

The Chinese slang for cockroach is 小强 ("Little Strong").  Over the last few nights, I have realized why this name is so appropriate -- cockroaches are amazingly resilient creatures.

To be different and b/c the roach in my kitchen is anything but small -- almost three inches tip-to-tip -- I am calling him 大强 or "DK".

DK and I were introduced to each other about four night...Read more
