director commentaries?

I'm a huge fan of watching movies at home on DVD (sorry, the cinema doesn't rock for me) ... but I get just as much enjoyment out of watching the commentaries (Wim Wenders bemoaning the narrow depth of field available with tradition film gear, having to use bi-focal lenses in Paris Texas then saying it would have been nice to have shot digital, for example!) and especially enjoy additional features like the making-of and director / production stories ( Dax's blog showed a clip taken from a David Lynch interview, which inspired this blog right now). So ... regardless of the film - what's your all time favourite "extra content" DVDs?To get started ... Hellboy is wicked ... Guillermo clearly loves his job! Lord Of The Rings, like the film itself, is bloody epic. Blade Runner, interesting but slightly disappointing (excusable ... it seems from the production interviews that no-one really wanted to make that film at the beginning!). Anything by Terry Gilliam - the 12 Monkeys special features especially -  an eye-opener ... except the feature on Tidelands ... Christ has the kid making that doc has got a fucking hard-on for Terry.Hit me!

This is a great subject for a blog. (I wish I'd thought of it first.) Francis Ford Coppola's commentary on "The Conversation" is one I keep returning to. I could listen to him describe how to make a cup of coffee. Steven Soderbergh and James Cameron's commentary on "Solaris" is very interesting, regardless of what you might think of the film. It's definitely worth a gander. If I think of anymore, I'll send them over.

Coppola ones have got to be good. The extra features for Apocalypse Now were enthralling ... although in part 'cause the footage was shot on some 1970s consumer camera and it looks like a series of mafia home movies! Will DVD swap if you're around in Central on the weekends. List as many as you like whenever you like! I'll keep checking back to the list often.

Wim Wenders yeah. Paris Texas is still a favourite movie of mine. Check out ... argh what was it called ... (need to check the DVD cupboard) ... "Land Of Plenty" ... really good story along similar lines.

my favorite all time commentary is on Naked Lunch, which is by coincidence one of my favorite movies ever. The commentary gives you hints on how the story was built, without spoiling all the additional interpretations you might consider for the movie. Cla

I don't think the movie Primer is that fantastic, but it was a first time director who made the film... and he learned while making the film and he approaches the commentary very honestly and sincerely and anyone making their first movie without a lot of experience could learn a lot from the lessons he shares.

Jack Black's video appeal that he sent to Led Zep to use the epic Immigrant Song in the movie School of Rock. Good stuff - and it worked, it was the first time that Zep ever gave permission to use their stuff (apparently)... Sorry to lower the tone, but I thought it was cool movie and I enjoyed all the extras...

Didn't realise there were commentaries on Naked Lunch, I got that on VCD I think! Actually, VCD image quality is so bad, the film is barely on there. My copy of "Le Denier Combat" is also VCD and that needs updating ... Never heard of "Primer" but will keep an eye out for that one. Actually one of the most tragic 'first time director' documentaries was American Movie which follows Mark Borchardt making a seriously low budget flick ... talk about perseverance!

Also if you're into Terry G you must have seen Lost in La Mancha.... A directors commentary on a film that was never completed (Jonny Depp as Don Quixote).. Brilliantly doomed wierdness. Its DVD extras without the actual DVD..
