Press Release: Yumla Resident DJs

this went out from the marketing / website guys today. just ripping a copy up here:

===

yumla has an ever evolving roster of some 25 djs playing all forms of music from hip-hop and jungle thru breaks, electro to house and techno. in addition to the local djs we often have the honour of hosting many overseas djs (check other parts of this site for info) and the odd live event.

in the past (talking 2003-2008) we actually made an effort to never promote what we were doing, relying purely on people's instincts to find out about the bar and our music. in fact we only put the illuminated sign outside about a year after we opened.

with an ever increasing signal to noise ratio – anyone with a pair of headphones now proclaims to be a world class deejay & sends out a press release every time they take a piss – we feel times have changed and something needs to be done to make sure our residents djs get the attention they honestly deserve.

definitely not your average weekend warriors, the yumla djs have records released, undertaken remixes, garner international acclaim in overseas clubbing press, broadcast live via awdio.com to thousand of listeners around the globe and often get booked internationally. you didn't know this? well, that's because we never make a song & dance about it.

although yumla has an incredibly diverse & dedicated music policy, there is one sound over the last few years which we have become famous for: tech-house and techno and everything around & between. we consider ourselves to be an absolute authority in south east asia, and were it not for the huge & historical scenes present in other parts of the world, hong kong would definitely be up there because of us. late starters.

the key residents as outlined in this new section of the yumla site are wendy wenn, basil tam, kerri monk, markus homm and bar owner dan f ... all of them have remained true to yumla, never wavered in support of their chosen genres and introduced countless hours of upfront music to our patrons. they have shaped the sound of the regional club scene for the better and they have been doing it without want of self reward since 2003. you will never hear them play anywhere else in hong kong apart from yumla.

so – as of august 2008 – a song and dance is what we shall make! but not too much ... if you feel we are going ott with our promotion please feel free to tell us, but until we start getting complaints expect to see a lot more information about our core resident djs floating about. although the difference compared to most other promotion is that we actually have something worthwhile to shout about.

always for the music.

Going to be a fun 12 months coming up. Loads and loads and loads of club music projects underway here and some pretty damn cool international bridges being made as I write this. more on all that later.

Side note: I am always on the look out for new DJs but be warned, it's not just about track selection and ability ... attitude & first impression plays a massive part in our selection process. We've had some right arrogant wieners submit demo CDs to us in the past - really, I'm considering posting up names & stories here 'cause some of the shit people throw at me is unbelievable - and (despite popular opinion amongst some who failed to get a booking) we are not looking for ass-kissers either. be nice, be honest, be humble, be knowledgeable and most of all be passionate. the rest I can really do without.

We are normally against promotion to be honest ... But under the same stroke simply being good at something is no longer good enough! The guys & I have been considering this for a long time – see how it goes :)
