Since I have been working on design-related stuff lately, here's another batch of backgrounds from Samurai Jack. These are from episode 32 - Jack and the Traveling Creatures. This episode is loaded with so much beautiful scenery, I had a difficult time deciding which ones to leave out. Scott Wills and Dan Krall art direction, with paints by Nadia Vurbenova-Mouri and Ellen Suh.

Here are some more treats from Samurai Jack. I love this show, especially the background paintings. I'm continuing to post these because it doesn't look likely that Cartoon Network will ever make a book about the show (they fear it won't sell) and these babies deserve more attention! These were painted by the amazing Scott Wills and Ellen Suh from Episode 30, Jack and the Zombies. Great mood created in this batch. The colors, the mist and the sponging on top of the wash on the moon is brilliant.

The missus likes pandas, so I'm painting this 9" Qee for her. It's mostly done. I'm debating on adding a subtle flower pattern on the ears.
My niece Alyssa just had her 4 year birthday, so in keeping with tradition I wanted to paint something for her. We recently watched home video of her telling her little sister a completely made up bedtime story, in which a sheep rode on the back of a pink dragon. You see, the sheep's legs were "too too short" for it to run, so the nice dragon helped it out. Painting solved! Here's the result.

It's officially been a year since I started this wee blog on blogger. Over the course of 42 posts, we've shared laughter and tears. All 5 of us. I don't have a painting for you today, because I've been gathering strength for this new year (aka: part busy part lazy). Rest assured, I will have a new one shortly. Instead, here are a couple of doodles from the trusty little sketchbook.
Santa showed up and finished another painting for me while I slept. What a nice fellow! He did an okay job, so I let him watch my new Blade Runner final cut DVDs (all 5 of them). So if he didn't visit your house, you know why. Sorry kids! If it makes you feel any better, he played with the toy flying car that came in the box set too much and made the door loose.

Since my last painting was of a unicorn, I needed to offset the cuteness with some Battleship Yamato (Starblazers) for my brother in law. This one was a blast to work on. I experimented with a triple-step wet-on-wet wash for the space background (first time playing with washes) and some spattering with a toothbrush for the stars (first time playing with spattering technique).
