Fear of man

If a relationship is based on fear, then there will be a performance oriented spirit.

If I am afraid of losing a relationship, my motive will be based on what I can DO to make things work rather than just BEing myself.

That's why marriage is so powerful. It is a covenant based on dying to oneself and living for your other half, till death do us part, for sick and in health. If you're in a relationship that is merely co-habiting, your mentality will be based on control.

For example, if this person doesn't make me happy, then i will dump them. Or even worse, I stay in a relationship and do everything I can in order not to lose this person.

"Perfect love casts out all fear."

The greatest love is this, that one would lay down his life for his friend.

The opposite of love is not hate. It is actually selfishness. If I'm in a relationship with motives to meet my needs, then I will never be free from the fear of man. And because of that, I will never be able to truly display God's perfect love to that person.
