Needy People

Addictions are people’s needs turned on overdrive.

Needs are not bad thing. God created us to have needs. We need food, people, and sex (God forbid I say that in the church.)

When these are needs are met in the way God designed them to be met, we live in absolute freedom. Freedom from substance abuse, addictions, pornography, alcohol, etc…

Is food bad? absolutely not, binging and overeating is. It’s not so much bad as it is just hurting yourself. That’s why it’s called a sin. A “sin” is simply a term that means, “to miss the mark.” It means that we are doing something outside of the way God intended for us to do it.

How do we know what’s God’s way? In the old testament they lived lived by laws and statutes. Moses explains in Deutoronmy 28, if you live by these laws you’ll be blessed. If you don’t you’ll be cursed. The fundamental laws of life (Think of it similar to the Laws of Gravity) are the 10 commandments.

Jesus went a step further and summed it up in one word. “LOVE.” Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Love your neighbor as yourself.

Problem is, what is love?

Jesus is the human manifestation of Love on earth. That is why in the beginning, “God created us in his own image.” That is also why as we receive the gospel (the seed from heaven) and we are growing into the likeness of the perfector of our faith.

I believe all addictions can be broken. Even though these are all wonderful things to do, it’s not by how many prayer meetings you go to. It’s not by how many hours you read the bible. It’s not by how long you pray (even though I have a friend who was miraculously freed from drug addiction). The key is LOVE. When people encounter love, when they FEEL loved, their needs that were once met by addictions begin to lose their hold. In the name of Jesus, who is LOVE, people can be set free from bondage.

We were created to need love.
