I think it is marvelous for artists to be inspired by other great creative minds. I rarely limit myself to looking at the same medium that I am working in. Right now, I write and a great deal of my inspiration is from music. It is often music that generates emotions that I want to capture in words. Other times, it is a visual image--a photograph, a painting, a drawing, the visual style of a film--that offers me the emotion that sparks creation. Joan Miro is indeed a great master. In college, for a couple of years I worked part time as a museum guard at the university gallery. There was a show that included several paintings and prints by Miro. They were quite mysterious and invited lengthy contemplation. There was also a huge Chuck Close portrait (it filled an entire wall of the gallery) that I studied intently, dating from when he was painting in that hyperrealistic style that he helped pioneer. There was also an exhibition of Chinese literati landscape painting. I have never forgotten that exhibition. It has stayed with me for 29 years! Now that I am studying Chinese painting systematically, I wish I could remember something about that show. But perhaps the names and periods don't matter so much as being able to live with that show 10 hours a week for 3 months. The longer I looked at those ink paintings, the less I saw and the more I understood about the paintings. 21 is a good age to have an experience with art that shows you something you have never seen before and opens up an entirely different attitude towards art, its production and appreciation. AnD has a marvelous Filipino artist whose work captures the childlike quality that you are exploring. Check out Justo Cascante's artist blog. Also, be sure and look at his oil paintings on his website. The paintings, in particular, often have a surrealistic quality about them. I absolutely love his work.
