E fest Berlin-based Kangding Ray from the avant electronica label Raster-Noton sees every performance as an experiment, integrating noises, distortion, bass lines, deep grooves, voices and field recordings into his pieces. He first performed in Singapore at the Singapore Biennale 2006 with heavyweights Carsten Nicolai and Nibo, before going on to release three acclaimed albums: Stabil, Automne Fold and Pruitt Igoe. Pruitt was on The Wire’s chart of 2010 Top 15 Electronica Albums.

For this show, KR translates his experiences at Fort Canning Hill into original, cutting-edge compositions. Catch him ‘jam’ with INSITU visual artist Widjaja in one of the segments, as the latter draws and transmits the sounds of his movements into KR’s compositions in real-time.

There will be a post-show dialogue with the artists.

Kangding Ray’s (music) is a triumph in pop songs via sound art that could only surface from the mixed media and textured aural exploration that Berlin has embodied for the past decade ...with strings and piano chords that bring the dichotomized worlds of electronic and acoustic sounds to a bridge, where the resulting songs are gorgeous and lush waves of melody. Still, the clicks are nearly always present and even with hushed vocals pushing things to the extremities of the pop world, electronic fuzz is not far behind, building, deconstructing, and reconfiguring the songs as they unfold.

... more than satisfies my experimental, organic, and dark rhythmic cravings. Kangding Ray ... creates synthetic, glitchy, and yet very musical compositions of analog tones, micro-programmed beats, and digital errors... Stacking against his electronic music design is his diploma in architecture - perhaps (Kangding ray) erects and demolishes soundscapes in the same way.
