This is my imagination world.
When I was in RADA. I was given a presentation topic to design a set for a production. I chose to do "Tempest" - A Shakespearance Text. However being an Asian in RADA and with some racist lecturers in the Academy that were driving me nuts often set my loyalty to my ethnicity on fire... I wanted to present the whole TEMPEST as a Peking OPERA and that I did. I've always been proud to be Chinese and I feel great to be Asian. The "skewered thoughts and design" was very well received. At least I thought I have succeeded in showing those BRIT some true Chinese beauty and values. I have turned all the characters in TEMPEST into some Peking OPERA characters as well as some mystical characters. That was in year 2000. Its history.
Tonight I was watching PROPERO'S BOOK by Peter Greenaway, I've watched this many times and still in awe. I've often wonder, beside the wonder of his vision, visual complexity, his interest in pushing the boundary in cinematography and his boldness in trying the untreaded path as well as building his unique iconic style in his work, how did he make so many people strip for him in front of the camera!!! He can try me... there's no way I'm going to do it for artistic reason, for money or for fame... absolutely NO WAY!
Anyway, the true intention of this blog is to disclose what's in my mind, which Asian Artistes do I think can fit into these Shakspearance role:
Here's some thoughts:
梁朝伟 Tony Lueng Chiu Wai:Hamlet / Macbeth
黄秋生 Anthony Wong Chau-Sang:Macbeth / King Lear / Prospero
金城武 Takeshi Kaneshiro:Julia Caesar / Anthony (Anthony and Cleopatra)
吴尊 Wu Chun:Romeo
刘若英 Rene Liu:Cleopatra / Tytania (A Midsummer Night's Dream)
I can't think of many because I don't really watch that many movies or TV, these are some of the artistes that I am very aware of.
Can anyone think of interesting characters to add to the list? Please do, I would like to read other's view on this.
Oh, last but not the least, I have a long love hate relationship with Shakespearance text. It should echos the sentiment of many asians like myself who tried to have a strong grasp of the rudiment of the English Language and the struggle to reach a decent foundation and yet confronted with these Elizabethan alienated text that oftentime seem too unfriendly.
I shall not elaborate further my displeasure in my journey in understanding the shakepearance text....
