Believe it or not I was worried I'd be late for the 7:30 showing of TRE
which I was supposed to introduce. I had spent the day at Obama rallies
shooting videos for our
United For Obama
YouTube channel. I arrived to find out that we'd sold out the smaller
theater assigned to us and moved to the grand hall theater (something
they told us they would not do under any circumstances). Now I wish i'd
invited my family and friends and friends of friends and baseball
teammates, etc. because it would have been nice to have everyone
together at one screening, but many of those folks are coming to
screenings throughout the weekend, including the 5 PM at Sunset 5 today
that includes my friends from community and political organizing. The
movie seemed to play well, with the sort of laughs i think of as
"diabolical" laughs outnumbering the sort of laughs that come from
amusement at pure humor. afterwards, we had Erik McDowell and
Kimberly-Rose Wolter from the cast and Rob Humphreys (DP) and Michael
Brook (Composer) on stage for a q/a. One of my favorite parts of the Q
and A were hearing Michael Brook talk about our process for scoring the
film (one we developed in making
Charlotte Sometimes and also used in
Americanese).
Michael said he now uses this approach with all films including the
Oscar winner An Inconvenient Truth. I also enjoyed hearing Kim, Rob,
and Michael compare "Tre" to "Charlotte Sometimes" and identify the
common themes.
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Fm6z7Rpjjw The after party was a blast -- more fun than any of our 'charlotte sometimes' parties maybe because i'm more accustomed to big parties where i have a ton of people i need to thank and say hi too. thanks so much to Sam Chi for organizing the after party as Sushi Dan! although I couldn't hear myself think and I lost my voice trying to communicate by screaming at the top of my lungs and i lost my hearing trying to listen to people by having them scream in my ear.... i managed to visit with friends i've known for years, celebrate with cast and crew, and make new friends i hadn't met before to boot. usually at premiere parties i feel bad afterward because someone i invited didn't have a good time, but on this night i feel as though everyone enjoyed themselves. Di Kwon, Phil Young, and Karin Anna Cheung from My Life Disoriented came out to support, as did Allison Sie from Americanese (Chris Tashima will be there today at 5 PM and Kelly Hu, like me, has been bitten by the "Help Barack Obama Save America" bug otherwise she'd have been there as well. Afterwards we decided to walk rather than drive for food because some of us (not me) were not "well" enough to drive due to alcohol consumption. got home at 3:30 AM. Now I'm about to go out to precinct walk for Barack Obama. There will be a host of new YouTube movies coming up soon on our channel, including some more movie stars! Stay tuned.
