Butter, that is a good one about interchangeable Asian casting. I know that many of my Asian screenplay characters are Korean, because that's where I have the most cultural knowledge. However, I can think of one that might get changed to Chinese if the film goes into production, because frankly Korean and Chinese facial features can be so different. Many non-Asians simply don't understand that many cultures are represented in Asia, and they can't always be interchanged because as you said, the culture is important to the plot. On the other hand, I also see the point of promoting Asian-American media representation, for which the ethnic group is less important. In news articles, Jeff Ma is quoted as saying he would have been more insulted if they'd cast a Japanese or Korean actor to play him instead of a white guy. He claims he didn't care that the ethnicity of his character was changed. You have to wonder why he passed up an opportunity to represent the AA community...
