Asteroid Between 30 and 50 Metres Across Just Misses Earth

An asteroid named 2009 DD45, estimated to 30 to 50 metres in diameter, has passed within 60,000 kilometres of earth - a near miss in astronomical terms. The asteroid was spotted on Friday and it was determined it would miss earth within a day.

Rob McNaught, from Australia’s Siding Spring Observatory, said that had the asteroid had been on a collision course even 24 hours warning would give people time to evacuate. There are approximately 1,000 asteroids considered to be potential hazards.

An object of a similar size or a bit larger demolished 2,000 square kilometres in Siberia in 1908. A 300 metre asteroid hitting earth would trigger a global winter for a time and a 1 kilometre asteroid impact would cause a worldwide disaster.

A 30-50 meter-wide asteroid just passed seven times closer to us than the moon, glowing so bright you could see it through a cloud. If it had hit the ocean, it would have tsunamied. The Sydney Morning Herald says that if it had been headed toward a populated part of the world, we would have had 24 hours to act and evacuate. Sky and Telescope says that it was about twice the altitude of our communications satellites.
