2009 is a year of bites

17 Feb 2009

I can't remember how many times i've got bitten in 2009.. In my career, probably, reptile bites appear to be kinda typical for me but right now it seems a lil bit too much. it's just the second month of 2009 but have already been bitten for times. Every single time i see droplets of blood. Snakes, lizards, even a domestic cat rewarded me a nasty bite when i was catching him...

Just recovered from a venomous bite in Jan for a while. Last week I got bitten again by a monitor lizard in a presentation in front of 800 people..

When i was holding the monitor by my left hand, my right hand was near and got bitten in the finger. I thought it's just a minor quick bite so I went on by holding the lizard by my left hand. I was just feeling a little wet but everyone's eyesight was on my right hand. I looked at it and yea my entire palm was full of blood. I covered it by the tissue paper given but it got saturated in a couple seconds and the blood was dropping on the floor. I grabbed the paper hard to make it look better and went on by left hand until the presentation's done.

Then i got treated by a nurse. She put on cotton wool and freezed it with ice bags for 5 minutes, but it was still bleeding largely. She said i need stitches but i said i had to go to next appointment. Bleeding stopped after 18 hours.

That's not a big bite, and I feel ok, it just looked like it's very bad but actually it doesn't hurt too much. Chinese fortune tellers said i will lose a large sum of money this year and actions to lose some blood like to donate blood will help. I ain't a believer but, oh well, it makes the accident positive. Whatever :) Anyways i'm fine with all the bites so far. Thanks for everyone who cared. Hopefully the next one won't be a croc bite. Continued..

As per request, here you see the wound after 2 days. Actually he bit me twice. He gave the first bite (nip) quickly and then let go. but I think I unconsciously let him do it once again. The second bite he did not let go and swung hard for a couple seconds. Probably I naturally wanted to be bitten... so that I can show people a lizard will REALLY give a bite when it feels the need to protect itself. We can't always show people the good side without another.

Do Monitor Lizards produce an anticoagulant, or was it merely a nasty gash? I think that fortune teller wasn't tell a fortune so much as stating the obvious: we are all going to lose money this year from job loss and/or stock markets continuing weakness. This will definitely be a year to retrench and enjoy our lives more with less (at least purchasing new things). Frankly, I've got several years backlog of wonderful purchases that I finally have the time to enjoy. I bet I'm not the only one.

shouldn't be anticoagulant in monitors bites, but it's well-known that there are numerous sorts of bacteria in monitors saliva. i assume it's fine as the biter's supposed to be a clean one :) its teeth ain't big but like an edge of a saw

it's the audience who told me i was bleeding.. when i looked at my palm it's ALL red. Assistants gave me tissue papers then i kept the show going till the end. it's a great lesson to let people know these animals do really bite when they feel like to. it's better than to only show the good side without another

It think people also need to see that these animals really aren't pets like a cat or a dog. They are wild animals that are small enough and easily enough contained to be kept by individuals (as opposed to a zoo), but they are still wild animals and do what they will do naturally. I am sure that some of these animals are not truly suitable for home captivity. After that horrible story in the news here about the woman who was attacked and horribly mauled by a full-grown chimpanzee "pet" that had to be shot by law enforcement, the message again is that many wild animals are not suitable as a "pet". You use your collection for educational purposes and are a trained naturalist, so your case is different. But I hope people realize that most wild animals want to stay in their natural habitat.
