Wolf Snake

Just found a little legless fellow a while ago during enjoying a house party in Mt Cameron Road, the Peak. It is a juvenile Wolf Snake. Probably it was the yummy, fleshy geckos that attracted it to come into the backyard of the house. This little fellow was fleeing so swiftly from my hands. It almost managed to get into somewhere to hide completely. Finally I grabbed it but was offered a speedy bite resulting another pair of tiny pinholes with blood on my hand.

Common Wolf Snake (Lycodon aulicus), or 白環蛇 in chinese, is a medium-sized, non-venomous snake of the family Colubridae. In the wild they mainly prey on small lizards like geckos and skinks. Frogs are also seen to be fed on. These snakes are strictly nocturnal. They are generally not common in Hong Kong but I have found them in many localities in the New Territories and Hong Kong Island.

Beautiful snakes. Are there a lot of snakes and other reptiles in Hong Kong? Is there still enough diversity of habitats to support a wide variety? I'm at a higher latitude, 32 degrees, though we do have quite a variety of reptiles and amphibians, and here in North Carolina. We have 3 very distinct habitat zones--coastal plain, piedmont (rolling, wooded hills) and mountains. Each habitat zone is home to its own array of reptiles and other animals because the habitats and, to some extent, the climates vary. Are there any books about the flora and fauna of Hong Kong in English that I could read before my visit next spring? I also want to get out of the city and enjoy some of the natural beauty of Hong Kong, so I want to have a sense of what I might encounter as it will all be new to me.

truly thanks for the concern, patrick. everyone just says nothing when i got snakebites or other injuries. it seems like those are very typical of i. i can imagine when i die and they know it and they would just say ah ha. thats another point strangers are better than closed ones. :)

Marie, when i say some places in the world i can look for many animals i won't say HK. but for such a tiny piece of land with so much urban area we still have 81 species of reptiles and 23 species of amphibians here in HK. That is unexpectedly rich. When you are here i can suggest you some places to look for these critters. Checklist of Snakes of HK: http://www.goateetoni.com/articles/snakes-of-hong-kong

Jaine, the wolf snakes normally grow to 50-75 cm. it is always humans who encroach on animals' territory. you know, these animals first existed on this earth ages before humans did.
