Linkin Park Competition is not working..

OK guys I hate to rant openly but I'm gonna have to do it. Firstly I'd like thank AnD for setting up a chance for one of our local bands to get a chance of a lifetime. You guys have done great thing to try and get bands like ours out into the public and have great intentions at heart especially with competitions like these that could really benefit artists..However the Linkin Park competition seems to be a bit flawed..There are people blatantly cheating to get extra votes. Plain and simple. The voting system is not representing artistic integrity or the music itself. It's not even a popularity contest right now. From what I can see this competition is about how desperate band members can get to pester their friends and family to sign up and log in to AnD and cast a vote.It isn't representing the bands right now, it isn't representing our music and it isn't representing any kind of artistic integrity whatsoever.I've just caught myself joining in on desperate and clever ways to gain votes and had to stop myself. There is no way that any other band has 300+ votes in such a short amount of time! If 24 herbs only had 45 votes. Impossible. No offense to Ghost soulja but he's got a spotlight position right now blatantly asking the people that are online to vote for him. How is that a fair spotlight?? Do all 20 bands get an equal amount of spotlight time during this competition? if so I can't wait for us to be on the spotlight too!I refuse to gain votes in this system by simply annoying people on Alive Not Dead to vote for us and virtually hounding people that may not vote otherwise..There is no way this is going to be a fair vote because I feel there is simply not enough active freethinking members on Alive not Dead to vote indescriminantly or fairly.I really don't wanna let me or my band mates waste days of our lives spamming people to get into a top five pick that people seem to be cheating to win anyway.Next time Linkin Park come to Macau or Hong Kong I will just try and ask to send a press pack over as this voting system is just going to show the top 5 spammers and duplicate voters... And these top 5 spammers are gonna push out good bands out of the competition not because they are a good band, but simply because they or their crazed fans are simply resorting to duplicating their own votes! If killersoap and 24 herbs don't make the top 5 then it will have probably proven my point. If it was an honest voting system 24 herbs would have possibly the most votes. Because those guys have worked hard with Alive Not Dead and have the best reputation on this website..2nd would be Killersoap or FBI in my eyes as they work so hard, good stage shows and have good songs.Sorry guys but unless there's a miracle. consider Gong Wu out of the competition as by playing fair it means we will definately not be in the top 5..Good luck to the top 5 desperate spammers of this competition. Because if you're not up to the challenge of facing an arena's worth of people and you win because you're duplicating votes.. Well then you've just wasted an opportunity you don't deserve and only got due to cheating.I am happy to sink with the ship named musical and artistic integrity because I wont allow my band to play that kinda game.I truly hope a good band wins the competition as LP deserve the 5 top bands to choose from. Not a group of people duplicating votes.Good luck!

and one last thing. the vote button doesn't work for people just following the link, YOU HAVE TO LOG IN. It even registers a vote logged out when you click on the vote button. But when you refresh the vote is gone.. Seriously people are voting for us and the votes are getting lost because people don't have patience to read and just click "vote" without realising they need to log in!!! Can you not remove the "Vote" buttons until the person has signed up or logged in?? I have had more than 15 people tell me they voted for us but people are obviously not getting the concept!

woah woah guys, hold on. don't worry, we are aware of the situation and we will be removing all the fake votes (see my blog from earlier tonight).

no problem. yeah, it is really short sighted, that kind of behavior won't get you anywhere and certainly won't get your band picked at the end to be on stage. :-P

about the logging in thing - we'll see about making it more obvious (perhaps a warning next to each button if nothing else...)

yeah just something more "fool proof" as there are some seriously impatient people out there. Even I voted offline for our band and thought I'd bumped us up 1! hahaha

Gong Wu, First off, we love your music - the first time I heard you guys, I remember saying "these guys are like Red Hot Chilli Peppers... except heavier and better" We would love to see you guys open for Linkin Park or any other band for that matter, cos frankly, you guys are talent! I still remember some of our band members meeting you backstage 2 years ago at the Y-Rock Jam, if you don't remember, the band was called "Don't Shoot The Pianist" back in the day - and you were really nice to us, and from then on we kind of looked up to you haha. Anyways to the point, I know you aren't pointing fingers in this blog but it is pretty obvious who were talking about here. Don't get me wrong, foul play is definitely. DEFINITELY. unacceptable. We believe in musical integrity just as much as the other artist, believe me. We were surprised ourselves to see votes skyrocket - and are still wondering where the hell these votes are coming from, but with ONE post on facebook, over a few thousand friends all together, and a few phone calls - who knows what might happen - virally. I really hope you guys don't genuinely believe that we "spammed" and/or created fake accounts because we worked just as hard coming into this as the others did, and being singled out is really hurtful. If any cheating was involved I will guarantee you, here, that we are not aware of it. We don't want to cause tension, and we deeply apologize IF this has compromised anything - this not our intent nor our choice. but at the end of the day it is at the discretion of Linkin Park themselves, so there really is only THAT much anyone can do - even if cheating is involved. I genuinely hope this clears things up, we don't want to be represented less than what we are, especially not in the eyes of a band we respect. Best Regards, Fall in Line

This sort of on-line voting for this contest is going to give an advantage to bands that have primarily a teen fan base (especially teenage girls). These kids live and die by their cell phones and are texting machines. If each one of these kids sends a text to 10 or 15 friends and gets them to join AnD and vote for band X, a band that appeals to said fan base...well, you see where this is going. Gong Wu is not going to appeal to most teenage girls and a lot of boys, too. Too dark, too in-you-face, too by the balls for all but the most intrepid HK teens (with the exception of the minority of kids who aren't into Cantopop). It will be interesting to see what happens when the bogus votes are eliminated. It sounds like AnD is on top of the situation and wants to assure that the bands are selected based on a level playing field.

Just had a nice email from the boys with 300+ votes. Maybe they're not cheating. But what it definitely does is prove my point. That the voting system is totally flawed in these kinds of competitions. There isn't enough people on Alive Not Dead that will check out our bands and give an unbiased vote. It's purely a "who's got the most friends" competition. I know FBI and Killersoap have loads of fans. Yet have hardly any votes too. this isn't the kind of competition to be held on a place like Alive Not Dead that doesn't have a huge active general public interacting with it. The top 5 bands will be the bands with the biggest family and friend network. My band are real anti social rockstars. that sit in their rooms playing music over and over and jerking off on the net. We don't really have "friends" as we're all too self absorbed, So we will lose.

thanks to the people that really our "fans of our music" for voting. that's what it should really be about. It's just turned into "you are going to be rewarded for signing up ANYONE to AnD" even if they wont even use the website and give a fuck about art. If that band has got 300+ new people sign up with them. I guarantee it is 299 dormant accounts that will never be used again.

Whats up Gong Wu, I agree with what you are saying... if you have more friends, you WILL ultimately receive more votes. But does that make a friend's vote doesn't count? No. The very flaw you are talking about is present in every voting system. Providing you are good musicians who are passionate about what you do, your friends will be your fans and your fans SHOULD be your friends. The way I see it, the number of votes you have is directly correlated to your relationship with your fans. Bands on that website who do not make the effort to speak to their fans as friends, treat them well and show how important they really are to them, will not succeed in this competition. Yes, a little promotion is necessary. I don't think we can disagree with that. Fans need to know that they can vote, and if you have a strong connection with them, it would be far easier to do so. For example, Alex Mikic just got back from working with Zen Zen Zo, an Australian physical theatre company, and gained a HUGE fan base there when he was performing 'The Tempest'. He had to sing as well as act, and thus, many people became his fan... ESPECIALLY when he replied to all their emails and so on. Alex is extremely talented BUT he also talks to his fans and cares about them. Now he made some friends (who are fans too)... Does that make THEIR votes invalid? Simply, the fact that any person (fan or friend) will take his own time out to vote for you shows a strong dedication and belief to what you are doing.

And let's not forget that Linkin Park make the ultimate decision!

I am currently having trouble thinking of anything else to add to that... I guess all there's left is to say good luck on the competition everyone, lots of respect to those of you who have continued to play it clean, and best of luck in the future.

sorry dude i totally disagree with you. on any other website there is tonnes of passing indiscriminant traffic. People will check out all the bands that they don't know and make a decision based on music or what they feel is the best bet to play with linkin park. However on Alive not dead there is simply not enough unbiased traffic to facilitate a fair voting system of this type. Yeah if we all have 300 friends and family that will vote for us then it may sway it slightly. But on websites like facebook or myspace the votes are in the HUNDRES OF THOUSANDS not hundreds and so 150 more or less friends or family will not make much difference and this kind of vote is PURELY about music. Yes friends can be loyal fans, yes family also. But this kind of voting system for something that is so important to all our bands and artists is bullshit. Basically if you have 100+ more friends than us you will push us out of a chance that means just as much to us as it does to you. It aint your fault in any way so don't think this bitch is directed at you personally. You also was lucky enough to recieve a spotlight that none of us got, but I don't resent it. I wish we'd have had it instead but ah well that's life. Basically i think the competition is bullshit. Alive not dead had good intentions at heart. but it's bullshit in my eyes. I'd still be bitching if we were in the top 5. If it's about music and thinking of a band to work with someone as big as linkin park, I know what my top 5 bands would be in this competition and I might not even put my own in there.

also in response to ghostsouljah. I'd just like to add that I fear Linkin Park will not get to choose the best of hongkong. Just who's got the most friends and family willing to log in and vote in Hong Kong. The lovesong has 7 votes and yet is probably one of the best bands in HK. Cho Chuk Mo also. Both should be close to top 5.. friends or no friends, I believe they should get that chance.

Gong wu... i'd just like to mention that you've got a total of 259 friends and fans on alivenotdead (where this whole competition is held) where me and ghost souljah have barely 100. And you've also got 65,000 visits to your page and we have about 10,000 each. And then there's the votes... No harsh feelings there, but before you call this a popularity contest make sure you realize how many more people will have seen your blog entry in comparison to ours. A little advertisement is necessary, surely you can agree. I've looked at your page and you've been featured in loads of shit around HK, so once again.. More publicized than either of us, and that sort of thing will get you votes. Ghost Souljah's blog entry was spotlighted because it was interesting – but if you took the time to actually read it, instead of writing a 10,000 word essay about the flaw of this competition, you'd notice that we've been advertising simply for people to VOTE, to support a musical community, not directly for people to vote for US. So instead of pointing fingers, maybe trying to take the best advantage of what you've got and trying to get votes that way instead of complaining would be better. Just a thought. At the end of the day mate, there are 21 videos. If Linkin Park doesn't like anyone in the top 5, they'll look outside it. We're in this competition to open for THEM. They can do whatever the fuck they want. hahaha. Good luck mate.

Haha. Gong wu, I'm having trouble understanding what you're whining about now... You seem to blame alivenotdead for the fact that Lovesong has 7 votes, Cho Chuk Mo too and that musicians featured in this competition are advertising themselves. You talk about who SHOULD be in the top 5, but the way you speak, you seem to think that your personal opinion is more valid than votes when judging who should win. It is fairly obvious why contests aren't held out in this way. Rather than bitching, you could be focusing on winning the game. But you say you aren't bothered to 'harrass' friends/fans to vote for you yet you'd rather blog about how unfair the contest is? Sure, the contest may not be fair for the reasons you're stating (you're not wrong). But life isn't fair anyway :) let's cut the moaning. I'm not here to argue with you. I'm here because I want to open for Linkin Park. Take my advice if you want to win (because we all know that you would not be bitching if you were in the top 5, whether u say so or not): stop worrying about the fairness of the contest and get out there and get some votes! Votes from friends or fans, they all count just the same! I know you'd like for people to judge solely on the music and what they're seeing. Unfortunately EVERYTHING is biased. Learn to live with it.

Sorry awong don't agree with your opinion on this one. Although some of your points are true and I respect. I guess I've made our choice to stand out in a different way whether good or bad. Whilst bands like Creed decide to kiss the world's ass. Bands like GnR told the majority to kiss their ass. Just like Barack Obama made his pledge that he was an intelligent and sensitive type and George Bush just went around shouting Yeeehawww. Thanks for coming over and posting your opinions. At least on this blog there are real heated opinions on both sides rather than thoughtless votes. Not saying all the votes were thoughtless. But once again I will say that 24 herbs should be in the top position no matter if people love or hate them. They should be at the top in a fair world. and I guarantee you that their votes are genuine fans.. Those guys play huge shows across HK and have loads more fans than all our bands put together.. I know this is the truth so fight against me all you want. I guess at least half of the board readers will agree with me and my opinions, hell maybe a lot more. And these are the kinds of people that probably like our band because that's what we stand for.

Oh and in respect to ghost souljah. I don't blame alive not dead for how the voting system worked. I just think the system was a flawed one in the first place and shouldn't have been used. I saw this coming since the competition was announced because I know the behavioral trends of this site. Once again AnD had great intentions at heart for all the bands and it's great one band will get this opportunity. However surely what the guys wanted to happen just hasn't and I'm sure even they didn't predict all the cheating and backhanded votes to sway the entire competition.
