I hope we'll be hearing more (loudly) from Gong Wu in the new future. Sometimes in a time of crisis (and I think that describes the commercial side of the music industry worldwide, not only in HK) there is the opportunity for different sounds, different people to come to prominence. I think everyone sees that the music industry as it has existed since at least the 1960s is in for very big changes in the near future. The paradigm of how music is distributed and by whom has already changed--now it is left to figure out what this means both artistically and in terms of business. Being informed about what is and what might be is a good place to be for a band that is trying to break out of the local live-music scene and become a major player. Now, more than ever, it takes some practical smarts to see an opening in the shifting scene and take advantage of previously unavailable opportunities. Despite what the industry types think, change is not bad, the demise of an old and frankly limiting and unwieldy business model that favored the suits over the artists is not something to be lamented. Yeah, there is plenty of chaos in the biz these days and a lot of people are loosing money. But, frankly, I think the seismic shift has already occurred, only we don't have enough perspective on what the new reality is to recognize it yet and to act accordingly. Keep you eyes and ears open and you may be among the first to see the new reality and thus use it to your advantage. For something as big and insulated as the commercial music industry worldwide, there has to be an awful lot of destruction and dismantling of the ruins before the new reality can fully take over. Just keep telling yourself that change is good, that out of destruction something very good can come, and that flux means things are moving along. Like with the PC, the smart ones were able to see the signs early and made strategic moves before the rest of us even knew that a new paradigm was upon us. Now these industry pioneers are among the wealthiest and most influential men (sorry that no women were on the cutting edge of this revolution) in the world. The fossils who didn't see the changes coming are sitting in Detroit wondering where it all went.
