SHOWS AND PERFORMANCES: March 8th 2012 - Heidi Mak for International Women's Day at the Ladies Recreation Club (Members Only) to celebrate Women of our times.
July 17 - Heidi rejoined the VOLUME house girl group to perform on Closing Night of VOLUME. The trio will perform their dance hit Change Your Life and one other power house number.
January 27, 28, and 29th 2011 - Heidi Mak returns to the Fringe City Festival 2011 will present her very own musical Once Upon a Time in Queens with friends and finest musicians in Hong Kong.
December 24th, 2010 - Heidi Mak will host and perform at Skylark for those who will be in Hong Kong for the holidays! Music include broadway showtunes, new musicals, jazz, pop, and rock.
November 20th, 2010 - Heidi will perform at the Hong Kong's Asia Expo for the VOLUME CD LAUNCH mega party.
October 30 2010 - Heidi's voice is broadcasted on RTHK 4 as part of the program Music Beyond Borders- http://www.rthk.org.hk/special/musicbeyondborders/australia.htm.
June 1st to June 5th -- Heidi makes her Hong Kong musical debut as Marcy Park at Tony Award-winning Musical Hong Kong premiere The 25th Annual Putnam County SPELLING BEE: directed by Allan Nazareno, and Music Director Scott Gibson.
May 15th 2010 - Heidi is the Music Director in charge of the program for the evening GIFT OF MUSIC charity event taking place in Jupiter Dance Hall.
March 21st to 23rd, 2010 - Heidi is the acting voice coach for children's musical play Wonka Madness taken place at the McCauley Studio at Hong Kong Arts Centre.
March 9th 2010 - Underneath the Lintel, Heidi guest performed at Glen Berger's one-man play Underneath the Lintel at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, Shouson Theatre.
February 2010 - Desert Songs featured at the 2010 City Festival.
November 2009 - Zion to SoHo - a cross-cultural array of songs from Hebrew to American jazz to Chinese pop, as well as the premiere original song With You
July 2009 - Heidi made her Fringe Club Theatre debut on July 17th and 18th, 2009 in Warren Wills' Genesis to Broadway singing in Hebrew prayers to Broadway Classics.
2009 - Heidi is one of the featured artists at SpeakUp! events, where she was accompanied by different local musicians. Their music and song styles vary from pop, soul, rock, dance. Some are originals written and produced by Heidi Mak.
BACKGROUND Heidi was born in Manchester, U.K., and grew up between New York City and Toronto. Her late father was an opera tenor performed in opera companies in Italy and Germany, and later a renowned voice coach and instructor. Her mother is an English-to-Chinese translator, editor, and master Theology-Divinity.
MUSICAL INFLUENCES Outside of classical music, Heidi's diverse musical influences include jazz works of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and others. Popular and rock influence include sounds of Pearl Jam, Cocteau Twins, Portishead, Madonna, Janet Jackson, En Vogue, Alanis Morrisette, No Doubt, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, and more.
CAREER Her music career began with classical piano and contemporary voice competitions. 1994, while a freshman in her high school, Heidi was assigned as piano soloist in the school's senior jazz big band and competed at the Boston Music Festival and won first place title.
In 1995, she had won first place in Peel Music Festival's A.R.C.T. piano performance competition in Impressionism category. 1996, she won 1st place in Romantic category in piano competition for a school-wide competition. 1997, she had won 1st place in singing competition for pop voice category.
Heidi had also performed and participated in countless recitals, and collaborated with solo artists, and as a soloist in traditional choirs and jazz ensembles in Toronto and NYC.
Heidi began writing songs and singing professionally in 2002. She completed her first recording of her original song "All I Didn't Say" and "Greetings" in Toronto later in year 2002. She also collaborated and directed the instructional DVD series "Piano Made Easy for Little Fingers".
She acted in several student films in New York city for the New York Film Academy, stage-plays, and other independent performing art projects.
EDUCATOR Heidi is one of the finest piano pedagogues and voice coach with many of her pupils winning top prizes national and local piano competitions.
Aside from performing in groups as well as soloist, Heidi had studied piano pedagogy alongside her Landscape Architecture program in university. She has been and remains an active music educator for over a decade, both in conservatory/studio settings and private practice.
Under her guidance and coaching, many of her students had won first placements in school-wide and regional competitions, and some continued into well-known art schools and universities to pursue advanced studies in music.
