Back in 2015 when I was on exchange in Boston, I spent many weekends (as well as Christmas and New Year) in New York City, watching as many Broadway shows as I could. I remember Curious Incident being one of my favourite, even though it was a rare straight play in a place that’s more often than not drowned out by larger-than-life musicals. So when I found out that SRT and Esplanade were bringing the National Theatre (UK) version of it to Singapore, I knew I had to watch it again. And sure enough, I got reminded of why this was among the top in my list of fave Broadway shows. The economy of it, the steering away from realistic predictable sets and props, the incredible use of physical theatre, the insane technology, and how they all combine to overwhelm the audience just like how overwhelming the world can be to someone like Christopher... The fact that this show can make me think of the nightmare that is A Level Maths in a positive way already speaks volumes about its magic lol. A must watch for anyone who hasn’t seen it, either here or overseas! .
