Steamed Buns and I steamed them myself!
I had a meeting out in the West Valley of the San Fernando Valley. It went later than I planned so I knew I would not make the Chinese New Year event in Studio City. As I started back home I decided to stop at Star 99 store on Sepulveda Blvd in Van Nuys. This is a huge Asian grocery store. I knew I wanted another bottle of that fabulous Sweet Soy Sauce and I always find great stuff there. So I stopped.
It was busy of course and I enjoyed watching the crowd at the fresh fish counter. I didn’t think I wanted to try to make a whole fish this time although I had heard that it was good fortune to do so.
I got some more tea and also stopped at the fresh fruit area for my favorite apples that I get there and also got my Sweet Soy Sauce. Then I just browsed. I headed toward the bakery area since I also have to pick up their Coconut Milk Butter Bread
As I got to the other end of the store there was a small crowd in the corner. What was the excitement? They had a “Buy 1, Get 1 Free” special. Oh I do love specials. And it was the steamed buns. Everyone was searching for the Barbequed Beef ones but alas they were gone. I asked one man if I could freeze some since two packages would be way too much for me and he nicely told me that I could freeze them. So I picked up a package of the Pork and Vegetable and another package of the Red Bean Paste.
When I got home I pulled out my trusty wok and the steaming rack which I don’t use very often. I prepared some buns along with some Tri Tip beef that I had leftover from the night before.
I decided to try some of my favorite Sweet Soy Sauce on the plate with my steamed buns. I know, I know, that probably is not correct but it was good!
I know it may sound silly to all of my friends in Hong Kong but I was so proud that I could celebrate the Chinese New Year in my own little way last night.
So Happy New Year again everyone and let me know what else I could try. I so love all the wonderful tastes I get in Hong Kong and would love to try some more new recipes back here at home. But please know that I am a “preschooler” when it comes to these recipes. But hey I can share some great Midwesterner, farm recipes. So let me know what you think I might like.
And I still have more steamed buns to prepare for the next few days.
