Winter is upon us! Which means snow. Which means riding. Which in my book, means new iDiom. iDiom is the collection produced by Burton that Staple Design and Fragment Design work on collectively. Each season, we create a tight capsule collection that embodies one message. For 2011, Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment was really inspired by Caron Wheeler’s classic song “Living In The Light”. He liked that it had many different meanings: Light as a source of inspiration, as a source of vision, as a source of energy, and as something lightweight, as in not heavy. So we incorporated all of these elements into the 2011 collection. Most notably, the lightweight factor. That was a key in each piece. Here’s the first few styles (that I could obtain good photos of).
When we thought of “light”, we immediately thought to use the lights that a city produces. One of the design schemes we did is a nighttime cityscape pattern. iDiom is all about combining the best of technical performance features with the best of real-life city usage. So the lights from buildings in a city made for a great pattern. Also, you’ll notice the lining are all acid bright colors. Like this acid green lining above. Again, “light from within”.
A new feature on the 3L Jacket: The Haaken Pkt. Hiroshi wanted to figure out a new way to be able to pocket his goggles when not in use. The legendary rider, Terje Haakonsen already had a way: Strap it tightly to your upper forearm. The curve of your bicep fits perfectly to contour and protect the curve of your goggles. So we developed a pocket in that same position and to credit Terje on the advice, we call it the Haaken Pkt.
One of the logo hits. Again, drawing inspiration from “Light”, this time as energy…we took all the world’s electrical outlet shapes and voltages, and created a graphic out of it. Thanks Ms. Wheeler!
hello from new york city.
