TILLMAN

The new NFL season started last weekend, days before the 11th anniversary of September 11.

Around this time of year I often cast my mind back to the story Pat Tillman. Tillman was not only a college football standout at Arizona State University in the late 90′s, he also completed his degree in three and a half years with a 3.85 GPA. Unusual for sporting stars to say the least.

In May 2002, after 4 successful years as a pro and with a multi-million dollar contract on offer from the Arizona Cardinals, he decided to retire from the NFL and enlist in the Army Rangers.

In April 2004 he was killed by friendly fire whilst on tour in Afghanistan.

Leaving aside the controversy surrounding his death, I still find the bravery in his decision absolutely astonishing, especially in a professional industry (NFL) which is sorely lacking in strong, inspiring characters.

A young man gave up millions of dollars and the glitz of professional football to help defend his country, and in turn made the ultimate sacrifice.

RIP Pat Tillman

the circumstances of his death don't tarnish the character and bravery he showed in his life.
