Oct 31, 2011Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the word “revolution”. In the traditional sense, revolutions are usually carried out by the socially or economically oppressed, but I believe that situations need not always be as severe as those described in wars to inspire revolutions. What about medical, technological, informational or even artistic revolutions? People like the late Steve Jobs or Albert Einstein were revolutionaries of their times too who dedicated their lives to changing the world for the better.
From sharing lectures at a number of universities about multi-culturalism in entertainment to meeting independent music makers abroad and seeing groundbreaking performances in Hong Kong, I’ve witnessed different kinds of revolutions in the making. It was in this time that I realized “revolutions” come in all shapes and sizes: as large as the next environment-saving discovery, and as little as an important personal lifestyle change. Revolution is an attitude; an attitude that involves seeing things critically and doing what you feel needs to be done.
Repeating certain routines at school or at work, then occupying ourselves with getting things exactly right within parameters given to us, many of us seem to lose sight of our ability to challenge the norm. Whether or not happy with the way things are, we often avoid change for fear of disturbing the peace or being looked at differently. Mustering the courage to make a change and living your own revolution is crucial to moving forward. Whether it be for yourself or for the world around you, I believe change is the only way to create progress. As you would probably agree, the world is far from perfect as it is, so let’s get to work!
