“Hello students! We’re going to start class now, everybody take out your text books for mathematics and turn to page 16…”

I bet that when you attended creative writing class when you were young and had to write an essay on the topic “What I want to be when I grow up”, I wonder how many of you wanted to set an example for other people and wrote that you wanted to be a teacher. I never thought that I’d actually become a teacher. This was my first time. And now I’d like to share some of my personal experiences with you!

There used to be quite a few schools at Taizi Village in the Xiao Yu Dong township of Pengzhou city, Sichuan, allowing the girls and boys from the local village to study at school. But unfortunately the devastating 512 earthquake caused a lot buildings and houses to collapse, and of course this included some schooling structures. After the disaster struck, a department from the local government immediately established a temporary schoolhouse, allowing these young children to gather together and continue studying.

When I walked into the classroom, I saw a group of 48 students all sitting together. The desks were arranged very neatly and the teacher even arranged for boys and girls students to sit together. Although they don’t have a school uniform, they still all look very smart! I don’t think they knew who I was but when they found out that I was going to be their teacher, they all had expressions of excitement and joy! This group of second year elementary students was in the process of having a mathematics class and they wanted me to teach them some maths problems. At that moment in time, I instantly became nervous and the palm of my hands was sweating! Because ever since I was young, I had no interest in mathematics and it was my least favorite subject. However, now that already I’m here, I thought I may as well give it a try! I followed the text book and taught them things that they liked the most. Below are some of the questions I gave them. Let’s try and work them out together as well:

If one flower costs $5, how much will it cost if I want to buy 5 flowers?

$5 for each flower x 5 flowers = $??

If one apple costs $2, how much would it cost if 48 children want to buy an apple each?

$2 for each apple x 48 people = $??

They were very quick with working out the answers and they even raced to raise their hands so they could answer the questions! But when I asked them another question that involved numbers with three digits, they became a little hesitant because they haven’t learned that step yet! I brought along some sweets for everyone to eat and just as I was sharing them out, I noticed some students concentrating very hard writing some English letters. And then I suddenly realized that I could teach them an extra English word, and that is my English name “KAREN”! It was honestly very heart-warming when I heard these young children loudly say my name!

 Even though I was only a teacher for a very short period of time, it honestly left me breathless and nervous! What I saw in my eyes was a group of young children who wanted to study and was eager to learn. Although the schooling standards for children is not as good as in other areas but their attitude to pursue their studies is definitely in the right direction. They understand the importance of studying. I asked the children what they liked doing the most and they all said that they really enjoy going to school; they hoped to go to school every day. Also, a lot of children said that they wanted to be a teacher when they grow up. I wish with all my heart that all their wishes come true too!

 

Young children are the future pillars of society. I am extremely grateful to the local government because they still managed to provide an educational platform for children to study under such terrible conditions, allowing them to continue learning so they could gain more knowledge! As for the rest of us who live in advanced cities, students should understand and appreciate their current studying environment even more; establish a stable foundation for your own future dreams. We should all work hard together!

四川彭州市小漁洞鎮的太子村內，本來之前都有多所學校讓村民的子女就讀，可惜 512大地震造成了很多房屋倒塌，當然也包括了一些學校的建築物；當地的政府部門在事發後立刻興建臨時校舍，讓這些小朋友們可以聚集在一起繼續讀書。

當我進去課室的時候，我看到四十八個小朋友們坐在一起，書桌排列得非常整齊，老師還安排男同學跟女同學一起坐，雖然他們沒有學校制服，不過看起來每一個都很醒目！我想他們也未必知道我是誰，可是當他們知道我來當老師的時候，都表現得非常雀躍！這一班小學二年級的同學們正在上數學科，想我來教導他們算術題目，我當時真的立刻緊張起來，手心也冒汗呢！因為從小到大數學科都是我最不感興趣的科目，不過既然來到這裡也要硬著頭皮試一試吧！我跟著課本來教導的都是他們喜愛的事情，以下就是我出的題目，大家也一起來計算一下哦：

 

每一朵花賣五塊錢，要買五朵花那需要花多少錢呢？

 

    花 $5  X

 5朵

 $？？

 

蘋果每個賣兩塊錢，四十八個小朋友每人都有一個蘋果，那需要花多少錢呢？

 

蘋果 $2一個

他們都很快知道答案，還搶著舉手回答！不過當我再問他們三位元數字的問題，他們就有一點遲疑了，因為他們還沒有學到這個步驟呢。我帶了一些糖果分給他們吃的時候，看到有些同學很專心地寫英文字，忽然我就想到還可以多教他們一個英文字，那就是我的英文名字“ KAREN”了！聽到這些小朋友很大聲地叫我的名字時，真的很窩心！

雖然我當老師只是短短的時間，不過真的讓我捏一把汗呢！在我眼裡看到的，是一群很用心求學及學習的小朋友，雖然教學條件沒有其他地方的小朋友好，不過他們的求學心態非常正確，他們都知道讀書的重要性，我問他們最喜歡做什麼事，他們都說最高興就是上學，希望每一天都可以回去學校。還有很多小朋友都想要長大之後當老師，我衷心祝福他們的願望都能一一實現！

小朋友是未來的社會棟樑，我感到非常欣慰是當地政府在惡劣的環境下仍然可以為小朋友們帶來學習的平臺，讓他們可以繼續學懂更多知識！而我們生活在先進的城市中，求學中的朋友們應該更懂得珍惜您們現有的學習環境，為自己未來的夢想打好基礎，大家要一起努力！
