I think that the biggest dream for every artist and composer is to have a song that becomes popular all over the world and continues to be sung throughout time. When I did some research on some information related on《Kangding Qingge》 (Love Songs from Kangding), I realized why 《Kangding Qingge》 was so amazing. Not only was this song very well known, it was also a song that had been sung all over the world. It was chosen as the “Best Chinese Love Song” at the first annual Kangding Love Song festival in West China, and it was the only Chinese folk song recommended by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to the world, and was also classified as one of the top 10 most influential songs in the world. In the 1970’s, this song was the only Chinese song nominated as one of the “top 10 most representative songs in the world” by NASA, which was then broadcast in space on “Voyager 2”. All these things I’ve just mentioned above is enough to express the importance of this song and its representation for Chinese music.

The reason why I decided to do a rendition of this song is not because of where it came from or because of the influence it has around the world. To me, I honestly have to say that I just have pure heartfelt feelings for this song. It also gave me a lot of inspiration and ideas for creativity. And this is my first time composing a piece of music with another person. The process of composing this music was actually quite interesting. After I hummed a bit of melody, Ya-dong would follow by humming another melody. The circumstances at the time were like two friends having a conversation; he would say one thing, I would follow by saying another. As we did this in the recording studio, the both of us only used about 10 minutes and we completed our new music composition. Since that time, I felt that Ya-dong and I have a tacit understanding with music, and that mutual understanding is really good. To me, this particular experience was very enjoyable and fun! Furthermore, the lyrics written by Li Zhuo Xiong put the entire song to full effect. The ideas and concepts expressed in the lyrics is about how times are always changing, and even though well known songs and melodies do not change, the thoughts and feelings of each generation is different. The passing of time is like a representation of how one trend engulfs another trend. Songs are the same and they continue to exist through different generations.

No matter how advanced or prosperous this changes into today, we still need to rely on love songs to express our inner feelings. A 《Kangding Qingge》can allow you to experience the changes of time. We still think that the melody is very pleasant to listen to, and I believe that the meanings expressed in the song are still the same. Even though the way we fall in love is continuously changing throughout each generation, but the way we express ourselves to the person we love hasn’t changed. “Love” is still there, and “love songs” are still sung. This song carries the lovely result of the production team’s hard work, and we also hope that it will become a new, lasting love song. Hopefully this song will continue to circulate during the different generations and periods of various trends.

Words from the Producer, Zhang Ya-dong: This love song left the most lasting impression on my mind. While we worked together in re-creating this song, I discovered that Karen’s creativity skills were extremely high. She was able to select the best demo out of all the melody creations that we had recorded. Especially in the very last part of this song, it made me feel that time and space had somehow crossed over. 我翻唱此曲的原因並不是因為這首歌的出處，又或者此曲在世界上具有什麼影響力，對我來說只是單純地對此曲有特別深的感受而已。這首歌也啟發我很多創作的靈感，這還要是我第一次和別人合作譜曲，當中的過程十分有趣，我哼了一句旋律之後接著亞東就哼下一句，當時的情況就像朋友在對話 ,你一言、我一語的時候，在錄音棚內我們兩個人只用了差不多十幾分鐘就完成了新曲部分的創作了，從此感受到跟亞東在音樂上的默契特別好，對我來說這是一次愉快的經歷！加上李焯雄的詞更加讓整首歌曲貫徹起來，詞中表達的概念是說時代一直在變，被流傳唱誦的歌謠雖然不變，但每一代人的思想及感受也會不一樣，時光的流逝就代表著一個潮流覆蓋著另一個潮流一樣，歌曲也一樣在不同的世紀內流傳著。

今天的世界變得多麼先進繁榮也好，我們還是需要依靠情歌來抒發內心的情感，一首《康定情歌》可以經歷過時光流轉，我們依然覺得旋律還是那麼動聽，我想當中的道理也是一樣的。雖然每個時代談情說愛的方式不斷在變，向情人表達的方式也不一樣，可是「情」依然在，「情歌」依然在唱。這一首帶著我們製作團隊的心血結晶也希望能成為新的一首長青歌曲，在之後不同的時代及不同的潮流中流傳下去。
