To me, acting is not a matter of pretending, but rather of being. But it’s a skill that every actor should work on continuously & consciously. No matter how much talent, or potential, you have as an actor, it is a muscle that must keep undergoing workouts, in order to be sharp & strong.
Learning on the job is not enough. It takes constant effort to practice outside of the work environment, in our own time & space. Discipline. Something which I need more of. I need that spark which captures the audience’s attention every time.
Acting is a path that twists & winds & brings you to unexpected places. It is an adventure of mountains & valleys – a mirror into your own life, your own physical being & emotional being. It forces you to explore facets of yourself which you never knew existed. It compels you to change your habits & to pick up new skills. Acting is one of the most challenging careers anyone could take up. And I chose this career.
I like to think that I’ve discovered more of my weaknesses after choosing this career path, than I’ve ever admitted through the rest of my life before that. It’s frightening in a way… Having to recognise your shortcomings & ugly points. That brings me through my ups & downs – as I try to reconcile my weaknesses to myself. But we just have to work on those weaknesses, modify them, improve upon them, and from then on, become a better actor & hopefully a better self.
Acting is not that simple. But to me, it’s one of the most real experiences anyone can have.
