Cubik is one of my favourite projects to date – from an incredible cast to a brilliant crew – we came from Singapore, USA, Australia, Germany & Thailand to film this ambitious 32-minute crime drama in tiny Singapore. I was honoured to be chosen as the lead – “Alex” – for this project and for the opportunity to work with this team of passionate filmmakers.
It’s been a long journey, but I remember gathering at the director’s house more than 2 weeks prior to the start of production, in order to rehearse the scenes. As I’ve learned since then, rehearsals are a scarce luxury for screen productions in Singapore, and I believe the camaraderie built through the rehearsals contributed to the enjoyable, though tiring, production period. I was known as “ the new girl“, so I’m thankful to have had rehearsals to ease myself into the filming process & the character.
Filming stretched over 10 days – a long time for a short film – and involved quite a few overnight shoots. My days turned topsy-turvy, starting work at 7p.m. & wrapping just before 7a.m. And the action scenes involved tested my endurance as well, especially after nights of little or no sleep. Fortunately, my Judo background stood me in good stead, and I didn’t get unnecessarily injured.
Our crew was flown in from Thailand, and Wade Muller, our Cinematographer, gave us fantastic images with the Red One camera. Jason Brenizer & Stefan Fanthome, our producers, spared no ends with post-production editing, sound mixing & colour-enhancing – giving their best to produce the best.
**‘Cubik’ had its World Premiere
at the Worldfest – Houston International Film Festival 2010.**
**‘Cubik’ won the Grand Remi Award
for its category at the Worldfest!**
The hard work of the awesome cast & crew – especially Jason & Stefan – has paid off. And I believe there are greater things yet to come. Hopefully this film will premiere in Singapore soon, and will be well received too. I’m happy that one of my most favourite projects has such a wonderful, well-deserved outcome. And I can’t wait for ‘Cubik’ to be screened in Singapore!
