I was invited to watch the Makan Drama Festival on Wednesday, 24 Mar, by friends who are performing during the festival.“Makan”, which means“eat” in Malay, is a central love of all Singaporeans. The Festival, held at Action Theatre, consists of an Appetizer, 2 Main Courses, and 2 Desserts.

Of the 2 Main Courses served up, I preferred “Cravings”, written by Chong Tze Chien. I especially loved the performances of the husband, Edward Choy, and the mother-in-law, Fanny Kee. It was hilarious, cheeky & yet heartwarming at the same time. The scrīpt was well-written & the performances wacky but believable.

“Perfecting Prata”was slightly slower-paced. There were moments when the scenes clicked, and yet at other moments, it dragged on & lost my attention for a bit. Part of the reason could be newcomer Issac Ong, who tends to swallow his words, and doesn’t have as much expression & emphasis in his voice as the other actors. Because of this, the play didn’t impact me as much as“Cravings”did, although it is a heartwarming family story as well.

Other than Tushar (left), who was performing in the Appetizer,“Poetry in Action”, I spotted a few friends performing as well – Daphne, in“Poetry in Action”,as well as Joanne & Darren, both in the Dessert dish“Eat Here or Ta Pao”. It was nice to watch friends in action as well.

And of course, since it was the **Makan Drama Festival , we could buy food like fried rice, fishballs & otak-otak to eat during the Appetizer & Dessert sections as well. The Main Courses are in the theatre, which is ticketed, but the other performances are free! Do make your way down if you can find the time… The Festival continues till this Sunday, 28 March!**
