Pink Dot marked its third year today, and it was the first time I joined in this event to support the Freedom to Love. From a turnout of 2,500 in 2009, to a crowd of 4,000 last year, it more than doubled to 10,000 this year. And that means a lot for the LGBTQ community here.Everyone deserves the freedom to love. Everyone. And there was so much love & acceptance present there today. “That which makes you different is what makes you strong. Whether you’re gay, straight, purple, orange, dinosaur; I don’t care.” ~ Darren CrissAnd I wore my “Born This Way” Tee. Attracted a far amount of attention, I think. The above photo was taken on the request of a Caucasian lady, who declined to be in the photo, but instead wanted a photo of me (because of my “Born This Way” tee, I presume) with the two beautiful flowers, Glen Goei & Ivan Heng.
Singapore is a fairly conservative society. In order to hold a demonstration, a group has to register for a permit, and it has to be in selected areas. For instance, the Pink Dot event can only be held in the gazetted area at Hong Lim Park, and only Singaporeans & PRs are allowed to take part in the final “Pink Dot”.
In the light of such strict laws and societal expectations, the fact that Pink Dot is growing every single year only proves that people are becoming more & more open. We realise that we cannot be held back by prejudice, fear & ignorance anymore.
Everyone has the right to love. The freedom to love. And even Google is a strong supporter of this event.
Look at the sea of pink!
All photos here are courtesy of
Derrick Siu, who was enthusiastic enough to join me at a last-minute notice, and dressed in the requisite pink colour!
The Pink Dot. Or Pink Blob, we created.
Releasing pink balloons into the air! A pretty sight. The photo doesn't do it much justice.
And finally, here is Derrick & me in the midst of the Pink Dot.I'm happy to have made time for this event. Every little bit counts. And I hope my friends in the LGBTQ community know how much they are loved and supported.
