I'm not sure, they just pop in there but I think a big part is really being interested in animals. There are things in the ocean and insects and things that are as strange as anything anyone ever comes up with in sci-fi or fantasy movies. Understanding how nature selects for different forms and trying to imagine a creature that works in a certain environment is important.
